In East Asia, the concept of qi(氣) is so important that it occupies the core of the worldview. In modern times, we are discussing qi(氣) at two levels. On one hand, it is a discourse on science related to oriental medicine and on the other, a religious discourse related to spirituality. The term qi(氣) is being discussed as a key concept across these two areas. How is this possible? This paper will address two perspectives in which qi(氣) of Confucianism is discussed. It will briefly describe the context in which transcendent reality or the sacred is discussed in religious studies and the controversial discussion context in science and discuss how the word spirituality has been translated. In this context, we are going to look at what spirituality can mean in modern society.

동아시아에서 기(氣)라는 개념은 세계관의 핵심을 차지할 정도로 중요한 개념이다. 현대에서는 기(氣)에 대해 두 가지 차원에서 논의 하고 있다. 한편은 한의학과 관련된 과학의 담론이고 다른 한편은 영성(靈性)과 관련된 종교 담론이다. 기는 이 두 영역에 걸쳐 핵심 개념으로 논의되고 있는 것이다. 이것이 어떻게 가능할까. 본 논문은 유교에서 말하는 기(氣)가 논의되는 두 가지 시각을 다룰 것이다. 종교학에서 말하는 초월적 실재 혹은 성스러움이 논의되는 맥락과 과학에서 논란이 되는 논의 맥락을 간단하게 서술하 고 영성(靈性)이라는 말이 어떻게 번역되었는지를 논의할 것이다. 이런 맥락 속에서 현대 사회에서 영성이 어떤 의미를 가질 수 있는 것인지를 살펴보려 한다.
