Caryl Churchill’s Seven Jewish Children — A Play for Gaza: Humanitarian Crisis in Israel-Palestine and the Power of Political Theatre
초록
영어
This study indicates the potential power of Caryl Churchill’s Seven Jewish Children—A Play for Gaza by publicizing criticism of Operation Cast Lead, Israel’s 2008-2009 military attack on the Gaza Strip, which resulted in numerous Palestinian civilian victims, including children, and calling for attention and intervention from the international community for this humanitarian crisis between Israel and Palestine. Anti-Semiotic controversy, simple theatrical form, and the development of media technology make this play easy to be quickly proliferated throughout the world. In addition, other alternative plays including various political perspectives have been created by imitating the theatrical form and famous lines of Seven Jewish Children —A Play for Gaza. This openness—which dismantles the fixed distinction between the play and the audience by making the audience actively engage with this sensitive political issue, and encourages various new and critical voices—is the great potential strength of this political theatre production.
