영어

The purpose of this article is to examine the Nobel Prize for Literature of Kawabata Yasunari and Oe Kenzaburo in the historical/social contexts of postwar literature. In particular, I examined the significance of the two authors receiving the Nobel Prize in Literature in the context of postwar literature. Kawabata’s Nobel Prize in Literature (1968) served as an opportunity to strengthen the obviousness of Japan/Japanese when Japan rose from the post-war ruins and returned as a member of the advanced economies. The official Nobel Prize lecture given by Kawabata Yasunari, was titled “Japan, the Beautiful and Myself” has sometimes been interpreted as a discourse that emphasizes the “beauty of Japan” as nationalism, but I would rather focus on a denial to the real world. The meaning of Kawabata returned to the Japanese classical art can be interpreted as turning away from the ugly reality and trying to build a new utopia in the forest of texts, after the Japan defeated the Second World War. On the other hand, when Oe received the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1994, many Asian countries demanded the apology against Japanese government. For that reason, Oe’s Nobel Prize speech. “Japan, the Ambiguous, and Myself” focuses on the issue of war responsibility and solidarity with Asia and Asian writers. However, when Oe won the Nobel Prize for Literature, solidarity toward Asia remained empty, and the acquisition of excellence in Japanese culture dominated the public sphere and media. Paradoxically, the winning of the Nobel Prize in Literature by both authors, went toward strengthening rather than diminishing the obviousness of Japan/Japanese. Of course, this seems to be a natural consequence in the public opinion that regards the Nobel Prize for Literature as a national honor, but considering the significance of existence of the Nobel Prize itself, it must be said that it is far from the ideal result.
