This study empirically analyzes the effect of SMEs' technological capabilities on export performance, focusing on the moderating effect of learning orientation and risk-taking propensity. The results of the empirical analysis of 181 SMEs located in Gwangju and Jeonnam provinces are as follows. First, it was confirmed that the technological capabilities of SMEs had a positive effect on export performance. This result suggests that, as emphasized by previous studies, SMEs' technological capability is an important factor in overcoming foreign costs that SMEs may face in overseas markets and positively affecting export performance as a source of competitive advantage. Second, the moderating effect of learning orientation reveals that learning orientation further strengthens (adjusts in the positive direction) the positive (+) effect of technological capabilities on the SMEs export performance. However, risk-taking propensity showed no significant moderating effect on the relationship between technological capabilities and export performance of SMEs. From the empirical results, it can be seen that learning-orientation is a variable that has a positive effect on export performance in itself, but it was confirmed that learning-orientation is a factor that can further enhance the positive effect of technological capabilities on export performance through interaction with technology capabilities. These results show that in the case of small and medium-sized enterprises with a learning-orientation desire to acquire new knowledge consistent with the claims of prior studies explaining the internationalization of a firm as a learning aspect, the positive effect of technological capabilities on export performance can be further strengthened. On the other hand, risk-taking propensity itself has a positive effect on export performance, but it was found that it did not strengthen export performance through interaction with technological capabilities. This study has a meaningful theoretical implication in that it has identified the role of learning orientation as a moderating variable that can further strengthen the relationship between technological capabilities and export performance, which is a source of important competitive advantage for SMEs in terms of resource-based viewpoints and organizational learning. In addition, this study can provide the practical implications that SMEs need to increase their learning abilities in addition to developing technological capabilities in order to achieve high export performance in overseas markets.

본 연구는 중소기업의 기술역량이 수출성과에 미치는 영향을 학습지향성과 위험감수성의 조절효과를 중심으로 실증분석하고 있다. 광주·전남지역에 위치한 181개 중소기업들을 대상으로 실증분석을 실시한 결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 중소기업의 기술역량은 수출성 과에 정(+)의 영향을 미친다는 것을 확인할 수 있었다. 이러한 결과는 선행연구들이 강조하는 바와 같이 중소기업의 기술역량은 해외 시장에서 중소기업들이 직면할 수 있는 외국인비용을 극복하고 경쟁우위의 원천으로써 수출성과에 긍정적인 영향을 미칠 수 있는 중 요한 요인임을 시사한다. 둘째, 학습지향성과 위험감수성의 조절효과를 검증한 결과 학습지향성은 기술역량이 수출성과에 미치는 정 (+)의 영향을 더욱 강화하는(정의 방향으로 조절하는) 조절변수임을 확인할 수 있었으나, 위험감수성은 기술역량과 수출성과 간 관계 에 유의한 영향을 미치지 못하는 것으로 나타났다. 학습지향성의 경우 그 자체로도 수출성과에 긍정적인 영향을 미치는 변수이지만, 학습지향성은 기술역량과의 상호작용을 통해 기술역량이 수출성과에 미치는 긍정적인 영향을 더욱 강화시킬 수 있는 요인임을 확인하 였다. 이러한 결과는 기업의 국제화를 학습의 측면으로 설명하는 선행연구들의 주장과 일관되게 새로운 지식을 습득하고자 하는 학습 지향성을 지니고 있는 중소기업의 경우, 기술역량이 수출성과에 미치는 긍정적인 영향이 더욱 강화될 수 있음을 보여준다. 반면, 위험 감수성은 그 자체로 수출성과에 긍정적인 영향을 미치지만, 기술역량과 상호작용을 통해 수출성과를 강화시키지는 못하는 것으로 나 타났다. 본 연구는 자원기반관점 및 조직학습의 측면에서 중소기업의 중요한 경쟁우위의 원천인 기술역량과 수출성과 간 관계를 더욱 강화시킬 수 있는 조절변수로 학습지향성의 역할을 규명했다는 점에서 의미 있는 이론적 시사점을 제시할 수 있을 것이다. 뿐만 아니 라 본 연구는 중소기업들이 해외시장에서 높은 수출성과를 달성하기 위해서 기술역량의 개발과 더불어 학습지향성을 높일 필요가 있 다는 실무적 시사점 역시 제시할 수 있을 것이다.
