This study examines the process of establishing, conducting, and dismantling the Komagaku Research Society, and evaluates the achievements of Korea-Japan music exchange. The Komagaku Research Society was founded in 1976 to reveal the identity of Japanese Komagaku transmitted from Korea. The first, third and fifth times were held in Japan and the second, fourth and sixth times were held in Korea. The first and second themes were Komagaku and Hyang-ak, and since then, the theme has been expanded to general music and the research area has been extended to China. However, it did not reach the joint research, and the presenters were duplicated, and the Japanese side, which was somewhat passive, had several limitations such as response and funding problems, and eventually it was dissolved. The Komagaku Research Association has great significance in that it is the first regular academic exchange of Korean and Japanese music, and it can be evaluated as a meaningful achievement in that it has become an opportunity to contribute to Asian music research.

이 글에서는 국립국악원 국악아카이브의 이혜구 기증자료를 활용하여 고려악연구회의 발족, 진행, 해체의 양상을 살펴보고, 이를 통해 한일음악교류의 성과와 의미를 알아보았다. 고려악연구회는 한반도에서 전한 일본 고려악의 정체를 밝히는 것을 목적으로 1976년 발족되 었다. 한국과 일본을 대표하는 음악학자이자 오랜 학술적 교우였던 만당 이혜구와 기시베 시게오 가 주축이 되어, 제1·3·5회는 일본에서, 제2·4·6회는 한국에서 개최되었다. 제1‧2회의 주제는 일본 고려악과 한국 향악이었고, 제3회부터 불교음악, 가곡, 한중일의 현악기 등으로 주제가 확장되었 다. 특히 제5회는 만당에 의해 처음으로 한일음악의 비교가 시도되었으며, 추계예술학교 국악과와 덴리대학 가가쿠부의 공연으로 교류가 학술뿐 연주 분야까지 확대되었다. 고려악연구회는 서로의 학문 내용을 존중하고 정치색이 없는 순수한 학술단체로서 양국 학계 및 언론의 많은 관심을 받으며 순조롭게 출발하여 8년 동안 명맥을 이어왔다. 하지만 상대국 음악에 대한 이해 불충분으로 공동연구까지는 이르지 못했고, 발표자의 중복 경향이 짙었으며, 다소 소극적이었던 일본 측의 대응과 기금 문제, 연구회 방향성에 대한 양측의 이견, 그리고 연구 회에 대한 관심 저하 등 여러 한계점이 드러나면서 결국 1984년 해체되었다. 고려악연구회는 한국과 일본의 음악학자들이 공동의 목표를 갖고 연구를 진행한 최초의 정기적인 한일음악 학술 교류라는 점에서 유의미한 성과로 평가된다. 연구회 활동을 통해 서로의 음악을 이해하고 비교할 수 있었으며 나아가 아시아음악 연구에 공헌할 수 있는 계기가 되었다는 점에서 큰 의미를 부여할 수 있다.
