This article is a study on the process of changing the name of the musical piece of Sujecheon, which represents the korean traditional court music. Originally, this music was a folk song of Jeongeup region, Jeolla-do during the Baekje period. This song was written in old documents under the name of Jeongeup. It was a common practice at the time that region names were used as name of folk songs. Until the late Joseon Dynasty, there were no names other than ‘Jeongeup’ in this music. In the 20th century, the name Sujecheon began to be used, and the two names were mixed until the early 1930s. The word ‘Sujecheon(壽齊天)’ means ‘I wish you a long life’. This name was one of the elegant names(amyeong 雅名) used in the late Joseon Dynasty as another music name. The favoring of the elegant name follows the tradition of the courts of the late Joseon Dynasty. Jeongeup was renamed Sujecheon and settled in 1933. At that time, Aakbu(雅樂部), who was in charge of preserving the court music, regularly held an internal concert called ‘Iseuphoe(肄習會)’. In the process of printing the repertoire of this concert, it is believed that an attitude that emphasizes elegant names has been established. The reason the elegant name was preferred over the original name is presumed to indicate that this music was one of the excellent music played in court. This study examined the process of changing the name of Sujecheon through old and modern documents.
