Investigating how interactive art can engage the audience through one’s bodily experience provides insight into how future museums can utilize digital media to provide engagement with the artifacts on display. This study examines bodily participation of an audience through diverse concepts including performance studies and cognitive studies and identifies interactive art as providing affordances for audiences to perform a restored behavior. Specifically, this study suggests that interactive art provides an active role to the audience to take part, to perform a restored behavior, and to construct meaning from their behavior. In order to explore the role of digital media in the above-mentioned ways, I created interactive sound installations and . In these projects, I reinterpret the creative process and aesthetic philosophy of pottery so that the audience can rediscover the latent story behind pottery through a synesthetic experience by physically touching different graphics on pieces of pottery to orchestrate algorithmic outcomes. Six graphics attached onto the surface of the pottery are utilized as capacitive sensors to enable the audience to generative music that becomes dynamic through the location of one’s hand. This project situates the audience with an active role to communion with the virtual potter, offering audience an opportunity to perform restoration behavior as if crafting pottery, and supporting meaning-making around the aesthetics of pottery. By creating this project, I show that digital media can provide an entry point for an audience to perform, realize restoration behavior through hybrid media, and support constructive meaning-making through a creative process. This study can provide guidance towards how interactive art can be created and utilized in museums to enhance physical engagement by the audience and to realize meaning-making with cultural artifacts and practices.
