The first modern researchs of Tongshinsa are Tsuji Zennosuke’s ｢徳 川時代に於ける日韓の関係｣ and Hujita Akira’s ｢江戸時代に於ける朝鮮使節 の来朝に就いて｣. They seem to have inherited some of colonial historical perspective, but have not been as explicit as before. This is because modern scientific and empirical analysis revealed a completely different level of Tongshinsa exchange. As a result, the possibility of the Tongshinsa issue expanding not only to Choson and Japan, but also to East Asian-level issues such as relation of Japan, Choson and China in the premodern Chinese world order. Meanwhile, Matsuda ko examined cultural exchanges of Tongshinsa under the banner of cultural government, which eventually led to the discovery of historical grounds for the colonialism. However, it seems that Matsuda actively or sometimes distorted Choson's civilizational superiority shown in the records of the Tongshinsa exchages. Because civilizational superiority of Choseon could undermine the legitimacy of Japanese colonial rule.

최초의 근대적 통신사 연구는 辻善之助의 ｢徳川時代に於ける日韓の関係｣와 藤 田明의 ｢江戸時代に於ける朝鮮使節の来朝に就いて｣이다. 이 연구는 일제의 식민사 관 속에서 이루어졌다. 이들은 과거의 조공사라는 관점을 일정 부분 계승하고 있 지만, 이전과 같이 노골적으로 단정하지는 못하였던 것으로 보인다. 근대의 과학적 ·실증적 분석을 통해 조공사와는 전혀 다른 차원의 통신사 상이 드러났기 때문이 다. 그로 인해 통신사 문제가 한국과 일본만의 문제가 아니라, 근세의 중국 중심의 세계질서 속에서 일본과 조선이 어떤 위치에 있었는가 하는 동아시아 차원의 문제 로 확장될 가능성이 제기되었다. 한편, 松田甲는 당대의 문화통치의 기조 아래 통 신사의 문화 교류를 조명하였는데, 이는 결국 한일 병합의 역사적 근거를 찾기 위 한 작업이기도 했다. 그러나 통신사 기록에 보이는 조선의 문명적 우월성은 일본 의 식민지배의 정당성을 훼손하는 역사적 사실이기도 했기에 松田甲는 이를 적극적으로 해명하거나 때로는 왜곡하는 방향으로 연구를 진행하였던 것으로 보인다.
