This study empirically analyzes the influence of digital citizenship competences on the sense of community as a part of civic consciousness. The study further explores to what extent the influence varies according to different age groups. The results of analysis demonstrated overall statistically significant effect of digital citizenship competences on four types of the sense of community in terms of membership, influence, integration and fulfillment of needs, and shared emotional connection. It is particularly noteworthy that the competence of participation plays the significant role influencing on the sense of community over all age groups. The age groups showed the differentiated aspects of relationship between citizenship competences and the sense of community. Among teenagers, the competence of caring others exerted significant effect, whereas cooperative work among age of 20s~30s and for 40s~50s was self-protection prominent factor influencing the sense of community. The results of the study suggest the need for digital citizenship education considering the characteristics of different age groups, as well as the need for academic attention on the concept of civic participation and civic consciousness.

본 연구는 디지털 시민성 역량이 민주적 시민의식으로서의 공동체 의식에 어떤 영향을 미치는가를 실증적으로 분석하였다. 아울러 그러한 영향력이 미 디어 이용자의 연령대에 따라 어떤 차이를 보이는지 살펴봄으로써 디지털 시 민성을 좀 더 세분화된 시각으로 고찰하였다. 연구결과, 디지털 시민성 변인들 은 전반적으로 공동체 의식(구성원 의식, 상호영향 의식, 욕구의 통합과 충족, 공유된 정서적 연계)에 유의미한 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타났다. 특히 참여역 량은 모든 연령 집단에 공통적으로 정적인 영향력이 있는 것으로 확인되었다. 그 외 역량 변인들은 연령 집단에 따라 차별적인 양상을 보였는데, 10대는 참 여와 타인배려, 20~30대는 참여와 협업, 타인배려, 그리고 40~50대는 참여 와 자기보호, 협업이 공동체 의식에 유의미한 영향력을 미치는 것으로 나타났 다. 이러한 연구결과는 공동체 의식을 포함한 민주주의 시민의식의 강화를 위해 정책적, 교육적 차원에서 연령대별로 특성화된 디지털 시민성 교육이 필요 하다는 것을 시사한다. 또한 학술적으로 참여의 개념에 대한 심층적으로 탐구, 그리고 다양한 차원의 시민의식에 대한 광범위한 논의의 필요성을 제기한다.
