While digital technology is leading a fast rhythm of a convenient life in a complex and diversified age, modern people are pursuing the spiritual simplicity and cultural individuality. In such a contemporary society, primitive art is attracting our attention via its pursuit of a simple life, which resembles the world of the primitive purity as a plain and slow life. Hence, this study selected paintings expressing life stories of aboriginals which can be felt from their art as a design motif, analyzed the meanings and formative features of signs from paintings and reconstructed visual elements, expanding the expressive world of modern fashion design. As for research content, it surveyed the aboriginal people and Papunya paintings and also analyzed signs, symbols, themes and formative features composing Papunya Tula paintings as a design motif. In addition, the study consists of the development of patterns, planning and presentation of works through reconstruction of formative elements shown from thematic signs. Research findings are as follows. Firstly, sings in paintings as visual elements of line and shape led to a combination of various patterns through reconstruction including deconstruction, separation and combination. Secondly, a combination of signs shown from Papunya Tula paintings shows a life story of aboriginals and it reveals that expressions based on such symbolism have value of storytelling for design. Thirdly, colors in Papunya Tula paintings express the aesthetics of subdued rhythms in calm and quiet images through symbolic images, and visual images are enhanced by the effects of color contrast. Fourthly, patterns developed from lines and shapes of signs in Papunya Tula paintings could be harmonized with modern geometrical shapes, matching with design of a simple silhouette. Based on research findings above, this study has significance in that it presented fashion design with patterns creating a story through reconstruction of signs by analyzing symbolic and formative features of Papunya Tula paintings in Australia.

복잡화되고 다양화된 시대의 디지털 기술은 편리함과 빠른 생활의 리듬을 주도하고 있으나, 현대인들은 정신적으로 단순함과 문화적 개성을 추구하고 있다. 이러한 현대사회 속에서 원시미술이 우리의 관심을 끄는 것은 꾸밈이 없고 느린 삶으로서 원시적 순수의 세계와 가까운, 단순한 삶의 추구라는 점이다. 원시미술에서 느낄 수 있는 감정의 솔직함과 표현의 순수함은 현대인에게 돌아봐야 할 창조의 근원적 발상원으로 다가온 다. 이에 본 연구는 호주 원시 부족 미술에서 느낄 수 있는 원시 부족 삶의 이야기를 표현한 회화를 디자인 모티프로 선택하여 회화에 나타난 기호의 의미와 조형성을 분석하고, 시각적 요소를 재구성하여 현대 패션디 자인 표현의 세계를 확대함에 목적을 둔다. 연구의 내용은 호주 원시 부족 전반 및 파푸냐 지역 회화를 조사 하고 디자인 모티프로서 파푸냐 툴라 회화를 구성하는 기호와 상징성, 주제 및 조형성을 분석하였다. 그리고 주제별 기호에 나타난 조형 요소의 재구성을 통한 문양 개발, 작품 계획 및 결과 제시로 이루어졌다. 연구의 결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 회화를 구성하는 기호는 선과 형의 시각적 요소로서 해체와 분리, 조합 등의 재구 성을 통한 다양한 문양으로의 조합이 가능하였다. 둘째, 파푸냐 툴라 회화에서 보인 기호들의 조합은 원시 부족 삶의 이야기를 나타내며, 이러한 상징성에 근거한 표현은 디자인적 활용에 있어 스토리텔링의 가치가 있음을 확인할 수 있었다. 셋째, 파푸냐 툴라 회화에서 보이는 색채는 차분한 이미지 속에서 기호 요소를 통한 은은한 율동미를 표현하며, 이는 색채 대비의 효과를 줄 때 시각적 이미지가 강화됨을 알 수 있었다. 넷째, 파푸냐 회화에 나타나는 기호의 선과 형을 토대로 발전시킨 문양은 모던한 기하학적 형과 조화를 이루 며, 단순한 실루엣의 선과 형의 디자인과 조화를 가능하게 하였다. 이상의 결과로 본 연구는 호주 파푸냐 툴라 회화에 나타나는 상징성과 조형성의 분석을 통한 기호의 재구성으로 스토리텔링의 가치가 있는 문양디 자인으로 패션디자인을 제시하였다는 점에 연구의 의의가 있다.
