The purpose of this study was to re-examine the hosting background and historical significance of the 1st Taekwondo Hanmadang. For this purpose, the results of the analysis focused on the literature related to Taekwondo Hanmadang are as follows. First. the background of the Taekwondo Hanmadang was the Kyorugi(competition) turned into a sport, Poomsae(form) and Breaking were relatively neglected, causing an imbalance in the development of Taekwondo, and the people have turned away from Taekwondo. So a new competition was attempted to solve these problems. Second, ‘The 1st Taekwondo Hanmadang’ was held at Olympic Park 2nd Gymnasium for 3 days from Dec. 9th to 11th, 1992. About 1,300 black belts participated. It was divided into 4 divisions: the juvenile, youth, senior and women’s, with 373 teams participating and conducted 3 Poomsae and 6 Breaking categories. Third, ‘The 1st Taekwondo Hanmadang’received a successful evaluation and presented a new development potential and paradigm for Taekwondo. Also it has activated Taekwondo academies and adult Taekwondo and opened up the possibility of creating a new Taekwondo culture, it served as the basis for the current Poomsae, Breaking and Demonstration games.

이 연구는 태권도한마당의 개최배경과 그 과정에 대한 탐색을 통해 역사적 의미를 재조명하고자 하였다. 이를 위해 태권도한마당과 관련된 문헌들을 중심으로 분석한 결과, 첫째, 태권도한마당의 개최배경은 겨루기의 스포츠화를 통한 태권도의 세계화 과정에서 상대적으로 품새, 격파 등이 외면 받음으로서 태권도 발전의 불균형을 초래함과 동시에 태권도 대회의 단조로움과 국민들의 외면이라는 문제가 제기됨에 따라 이를 타개하기 위해 기존방식에서 탈피하여 새로 운 대회운영방식으로의 전환을 시도하게 되었다. 둘째, ‘제1회 태권도한마당’은 1992년 12월 9일부터 11일까지 3일 간 올림픽공원 제2체육관에서 개최되었으며 1,300여 명의 유단자가 참가하였다. 소년부, 청년부, 장년부, 여성부 4개부 로 나뉘어 시행하였으며 총 373팀이 참가한 가운데 품새 3개 부문(일반, 창작, 건강), 격파 6개 부문(손날, 주먹, 발, 멀리․ 높이뛰어차기, 종합)으로 실시되었다. 셋째, ‘제1회 태권도한마당’은 성공적인 평가를 받으며 태권도의 새로운 발전가능 성과 패러다임을 제시했다. 또한 태권도대회의 다양화와 함께 생활체육으로 자리매김하여 일선도장과 성인 태권도 활성 화에 기여하고, 나아가 새로운 태권도 문화를 창출할 수 있는 가능성을 열어주는 등 현재의 품새, 격파, 시범경기의 밑거름 이 되었다.
