To talk about physical education in the East, we cannot debate the Confucianism. This is because the philosophy code of Oriental thought is the Confucian thought. 동양의 체육교육을 담론하려면 유가사상(儒家思想)을 빗겨갈 수 없다. 왜냐하면 동양사상의 철학코드가 바로 유가사상이기 때문이다. 유가사상의 시조는 공자(孔子)이다. 공자를 이은 유가의 사상가는 맹자(孟子)와 순자(荀子)이 다. 그런데 맹자는 성선설(性善說)을 주장하였지만, 순자는 성악설(性惡說)을 주장하였다. 같은 유학자이자만 서로 상이 한 이론을 디자인하였다. 맹자에 비해 순자는 인간의 본성을 악하다고 보면서 교육으로 이를 정화시켜야 한다고 하면서 교육을 강조하였다. 따라서 순자사상에서 교육은 무엇보다 중요하다. 순자사상에서 본 체육교육사상의 연구결과는 다음 과 같다. 첫째 순자사상에서 본 체육교육의 필요성은 악(惡)한 본성(本性)의 정화(淨化)를 위해 필요하다. 둘째, 안정성 확보와 사회질서 유지를 위해 모든 체육인에게 교화(敎化)교육을 하여야 한다. 셋째, 순자사상에서 본 체육교육 방법론은 실천을 전제로 한 집단적 의무교육이다.
