Unlike land, it is particularly difficult to manage wastes such as marine wastes as well as household wastes in island area. In this study, the improved management system for coastal wastes in islands was proposed. As a result, similar to a land-based street cleaner, a coastal cleaner, charging the collection and monitoring of wastes, a dedicated vehicle, a dedicated ship and a storage facility are suggested to place to collect and transport the wastes. Finally, specific measures were proposed to ensure efficient collection, transportation and disposal of coastal wastes. In particular, the concept of the number of daily work storage facilities for ship (SDS, service/day/ship) and the time required for working per storage facility (SHS, ship·hour/service) was introduced in the analysis of the collection system for coastal wastes.

육상과 달리 도서지역에서는 생활폐기물뿐만 아니라 해안폐기물도 발생하여 적정 수거, 운반, 처리 등 폐기물 관리에 특히 어려움을 겪고 있다. 본 연구에서는 도서지역의 해안폐기물 관리체계의 개선방안을 제안했다. 육상의 환경미화원과 유사하게 도서의 해안선 일정 부분의 폐기물을 수집하고 모니터링 등을 담당하는 해양환경미화원을 두고, 수집된 폐기물 을 수거·운반하는 전용차량과 전용선박을 두도록 한다. 그리고 해양환경미화원이 수집한 폐기물은 각 도서의 지정 집하 시설에서 보관하도록 제안했다. 마지막으로 해안폐기물의 효율적인 수집·수거, 운반과 처리·처분이 이루어질 수 있도록 구체적인 방안을 제시하였다. 특히 해양폐기물의 수거 체계 해석 시에는 선박의 1일 작업 집하시설 수(service/day/ship, SDS)와 집하시설 당 작업 소요시간(ship·hour/service, SHS)이라는 개념을 도입하였다.
