This study is about Career Education, which is an effective adult education, in modern society. It is considered that synthetic and standardized adult education programs with statistical methods have difficulties to satisfy various individual learning needs in individualizing modern society. An individual in the process of modernization is considered to be effective by self directed learning through reconstruction of experience. Active educational method means an individual learning in the process of self realization and an effective solution of his problems through construction of new perspective of life. The preface of this article shows that the dispute on sociological individualization has vitalized the study of career history in adult education. The main issue of the study of career history and its empirical researches. Today entering into an aging society, the significance of lifelong education becomes more important in Korea. The study of Career history, as a qualitative research, shows a real life of socialization through studying the process of career history with a personal view in real life. The study of career is making its appearance as a new paradigm in adult education.

이 연구에서는 현대사회의 효과적인 성인교육 방법인 생애교육에 대해서 알아보았다. 통계적인 방법에 의한 총체적이고 획일적인 성인교육 프로그램들은 개인화가 진행되고 있는 현대화 사회에서는 가지각색의 개인의 학습욕구를 모두 만족시킬 수 없다. 현대화 과정 속의 개인은 자신의 삶을 계획하고 위기를 극복하는 능동적인 행위자로 여겨진다. 성인교육은 경험의 재구성을 통한 자기주도적 학습을 통하여 효과적일 수 있다. 스스로 배우는 법, 즉 자아발견의 과정을 통하여 개인은 스스로 깨우치고 자기의 문제해결을 새로운 삶의 시각의 구성을 통하여 가장 효과적으로 만든다는 것이다. 이 연구의 서론에서는 사회학적인 개인화 논쟁이 성인교육학에서의 생애사 연구를 활성화시켰음을 알아보았고, 본론에서는 생애사 연구의 이론적 배경과 정의, 그리고 경험연구를 통하여 생애사 연구를 서술하였다. 이제 한국에서도 노령화사회의 진입과 더불어 평생교육의 의의가 날로 중요해지고 있다. 질적인 생애사 연구는 일상생활세계에서 개인의 시각으로 생애사 과정을 연구함으로써 사회화의 실제상을 잘 나타내주고 있다. 생애사 연구는 성인교육에서 새로운 패러다임으로 등장하고 있다.
