초록

영어

The purpose of this paper is to establish in what point the orchid painting in ink (墨蘭畵) was shaped at the Yuan dynasty(元代, 1271-1368) under the influence of the poem “Lisao (離騷)” of Chu (楚) state’s Qu Yuan (屈原, BC 353-BC 278?), focusing on Zheng Sixiao (鄭思肖, 1241-1318) who is called the founder of the orchid paintings in ink, because he created the models (典範) of rootless orchids (無根蘭) and orchids with roots exposed (露根蘭). At the end of the Warring States period (戰國時代), which was a turbulent period (亂世), Qu Yuan was a competent royal subject (忠臣), but was exiled after being framed. And it was confirmed that in order to appeal to the king of the decadent Chu for his innocence (潔白) and patriotism (憂國忠貞), he employed as subjects of writing, not only the orchids, which is a traditional symbol of the fidelity (節槪) of a man of virtue(君 子), but also various herbs (香草) to write his long epic poem (長篇敍事 詩) “Lisao”. Zheng Sixiao also lived in seclusion after the collapse of the Southern Song (南宋, 1127-1279) dynasty. We could see that he created painting models of orchids in ink, such as rootless orchids and orchids with roots exposed, in the sense of patriotism for the collapsed Song(宋) dynasty and resistance to the Mongols. It must be said that there is no land to bury orchids because the land was taken away by the Yuan(元) dynasty. Even if more than 1,600 years of difference separate Qu Yuan and Zheng Sixiao, they have in common the fact that they were in a difficult position, that is to say that they were either exiled or in seclusion due to the political situation in turbulent times, as well as their unwavering will for loyalty to their country. In particular, orchids, a common subject in Qu Yuan’s poems and Zheng Sixiao’s paintings, are in same line with the fact that they symbolize "patriotism and nationalism." We could see that Zheng Sixiao, who was a migrant (遺民) under colonial rule who would be threatened with death if he directly exposed his fidelity and loyalty to his country, likened himself to Qu Yuan, who was in a position similar to him with similar beliefs. That is why the symbolic meaning of orchids in "Lisao" was implicitly embodied in the orchid paintings in ink.
