Revolving around the idea of tai ji in Zhang Shi’s philosophy, this article focuses on its exact meaning and explains the content of “tai ji” along with its cosmological and cultural meanings in Zhang’s philosophy in modern academic terms. First, it is pointed out that Zhang’s cosmology is heavily informed by values, whereby yin-yang and five elements transform into creatures and things, showing the inevitability of the value imbued within all creatures and things. Tai ji is the absolute value that is imbued within all creatures and things and endows them with existential rationality; “tai ji” is transcendentally inevitable but objectively and practically assumed rather than inevitable, while human beings have the responsibility to fulfill this value. In other words, this absolute value is the meaning of Zhang’s “tai ji being nature,” while all efforts of cultivation and humanistic practice are ultimately meant to realize nature and fulfill the value of tai ji.
