This paper intends to review the present studies on the theory of noumenon in Woogye Sung-hon’s philosophy. Through this study, it was a general assessment that Woogye was regarded as an eclectic about the philosophy of Toegye and Yulgok, but the actual contents showed that the definition of “eclectic” was different. Nevertheless, this evaluation is largely because most Korean thought studies have considered back and forth thoughts based on Toegye and Yulgok. In other words, it seems that it was a general analysis of the history of Korean thoughts that the historian status of the theory of noumenon was measured based on the point of the Toegye and Yulgok based on the point of his knowing. In this regard, the main idea of Neo-Confucianism, such as the “Sage Practice and Utopian Governance( )”, is not considered. It only analyzes categorically theories of metaphysics, psychology and ethics. This sorting method, which is categorized according to the Western philosophy of philosophy, is difficult to grasp the subject of scholarship and thus needs to be avoided. On the other hand, the evaluation of Woogye also reflected the controversial view of the late Joseon Dynasty and the biased view of Takahashi Toru during the Japanese occupation. Recently, various problems and new interpretation attempts to avoid such problems were also confirmed.

본고는 우계 성혼의 본체론에 대한 현재까지의 연구를 검토하고자 하였다. 이를 통해 기존 연구에서 우계를 퇴계와 율곡의 철학에 대한 절충론자라고 보는 것이 대체적인 평가였으나, 실제 내용을 보면 “절충”에 대한 기존 연구 의 정의가 제각각이었음을 확인할 수 있었다. 그럼에도 이러한 평가가 대체적 인 것은, 대부분의 한국사상사 연구가 퇴계와 율곡을 기준으로 전후의 사상을 가늠하였기 때문으로 판단된다. 즉 퇴계와 율곡의 理氣論을 기준으로 둘 사이 어느 지점에 그의 理氣論이 있는지를 가지고 도학 내지 주자학의 사상사적 위상을 가늠하는 것이 일반적인 사상사 분석이었기 때문으로 보인다. 이런 파악에서는 內聖外王과 같은 주자학의 본령은 고려되지 않는다. 오로지 형이상 학으로서의 理氣論과 인간학으로서의 심성론 및 수양론을 범주적으로 나누어 분석할 뿐이다. 서양철학의 범주론에 맞춘 이러한 구분법으로는 학문의 본령 을 잡아내기 어려우므로 지양될 필요가 있어 보인다. 한편 우계에 관한 평가 에는 조선후기의 당쟁적 시각이나 일제 강점기 다카하시 도루의 편향된 시각 역시 반영된 측면이 있어 보였다. 최근 이러한 문제를 지양하고자 하는 다양한 문제제기 및 새로운 해석시도 역시 확인할 수 있었다.
