This study analyzed the current state of traffic accidents for elderly drivers in Gyeongsangbuk-do, which entered the post-aged society, and surveyed elderly drivers on their awareness of traffic safety. Based on this, the purpose of this study is to propose a plan to prevent traffic accidents for elderly drivers in Gyeongsangbuk-do. To analyze traffic safety awareness, the characteristics of elderly drivers, the awareness of the risk of traffic accidents among elderly drivers, regional environmental characteristics, and the acceptance of policies were analyzed empirically. In addition, the elderly drivers were divided into two groups (city and rural area) to perform comparison and analysis. As a result, some differences were found in the unfamiliar driving environment, unfamiliar driving ability, risk of traffic accidents, and public transportation. Based on the analysis results, Four things were proposed to prevent traffic accidents for elderly drivers. First, traffic safety education for elderly drivers is needed. Second, active public relations activities are needed for the safety of elderly drivers. Third, it is necessary to install and strengthen the traffic safety facilities for elderly drivers. Fourth, elderly drivers need to be aware of the risk of traffic accidents themselves. Considering that mobility(self-driving ability) of the elderly is an important factor that positively affects the quality of life in old age, more in-depth studies will be needed.

본 연구는 초고령사회로 진입한 경상북도의 고령운전자 교통사고 현황을 분석하고, 고 령운전자를 대상으로 교통안전에 대한 의식을 조사하였다. 이를 토대로 경상북도 고령운 전자 교통사고 예방 방안을 제시하는데 그 목적이 있다. 교통안전의식을 분석하기 위해 고령운전자의 특성, 고령운전자의 교통사고 위험성에 대한 인식, 지역적 환경특성, 정책 수용성에 대해 실증적으로 분석하였다. 게다가 고령운전자를 두 집단(도시와 농촌)으로 나누어 비교·분석을 수행하였으며, 생소한 운전환경, 익숙하지 않은 운전능력, 교통사고 위험성, 대중교통 등에서 다소 차이가 발견되었다. 분석결과를 토대로 고령운전자 교통사 고 예방을 위해 4가지를 제안하였다. 첫째, 찾아가는 고령운전자 교통안전 교육이 필요하 다. 둘째, 고령운전자 교통안전을 위해 적극적인 홍보 활동이 필요하다. 셋째, 고령운전자 교통안전시설을 설치·강화할 필요가 있다. 넷째, 고령운전자들 스스로 교통사고 위험성에 대해 자각(自覺)할 필요가 있다. 본 연구는 정부가 강조하고 있는 지역 중심 교통안전에 대한 패러다임 전환의 관점에서 고령운전자들의 안전한 교통문화 조성을 위한 연구로 실 증적 분석을 통해 고령운전자들의 교통사고 예방 방안을 제시했다는 데 의의가 있다.
