The paper examines the implications and applications of the prisoner’s dilemma game. We are interested in the prisoner’s dilemma game mainly because of the fact that even though there is a Pareto superior result, the players end up with the Pareto inferior result in the game. This phenomenon is well known to people, and lots of media articles took the dilemma as a main topic. To analyze the cases of media articles written about the prisoner’s dilemma, this study examines various forms of prisoner’s dilemma models and analyzes the models. These include multi-person multi-strategy models and the infinitely repeated game models as well as the standard 2-person 2-strategy models. On the basis of the results of theoretical analysis of the prisoner’s dilemma, this study has found that there are many cases of inappropriate applications of the prisoner’s dilemma in media articles. These cases include irrelevant applications, and the common errors are simply applying the bad outcomes of relating issues to the prisoner’s dilemma. This study has also found that media articles include many incorrect interpretation of the prisoner’s dilemma phenomenon.

죄수의 딜레마 현상은 서로에게 더 좋은 결과가 있음에도 불구하고, 서로에게 더 나쁜 결과로 귀착된다는 점에서 많은 사람의 관심을 끄는 문제이다. 죄수의 딜레마가 중요한 것은 죄수의 딜레마로 설명할 수 있는 경제·사회적 현상이 많기 때문이다. 죄수의 딜레마 는 가장 많이 연구된 주제이자 일반인에게 가장 많이 알려진 개념이기도 하다. 본 연구는 죄수의 딜레마의 개념이 언론 기사에서 적절하게 적용되었는지를 분석하는 것을 목적으로 한다. 이를 위해 죄수의 딜레마 게임을 다양한 형태로 정의하고 분석하고 그 시사점을 통일된 시각으로 정리하는 것이 또 하나의 목적이다. 인터넷을 통해 일반인이 접할 수 있는 언론 기사를 중심으로 분석한 결과, 많은 기사에서 죄수의 딜레마 개념이 잘못 적용 되어 있다는 것을 발견하였다. 공통적으로 발견되는 오류는 관련 이슈에서 파국적인 결말 에 도달한다는 점에만 주목하여 이를 죄수의 딜레마 현상이라고 규정짓는 것이다. 죄수의 딜레마의 개념이 적절하게 적용된 사례에서도 그 결과에 대한 해석에서 많은 오류가 발견 되었다. 죄수의 딜레마 현상이 신뢰나 소통의 부족으로 발생한다거나 집단의 최선을 사회 의 최선으로 해석하는 것 등이 그것이다. 본 연구에서는 이러한 해석이 잘못되었음을 분석한다. 정책적입안자와 전문경영인의 관점에서도 관련 당사자 집단의 최선이 사회적 최선으로 바로 해석될 수 없다는 점을 이해하는 것이 중요하다.
