A Study on Translating Proper Nouns in French Picture Books.
초록
영어
This article examines one hundred proper nouns in the Korean translation of 63 French picture books published since 2000: it studies only the anthroponym - names of characters from a perspective by which translation results from negotiation. The names are composed in diverse ways: names from the real world, names related with wordplay, names with intertextual link; existing words with the first letter of each word capitalized; the combination of existing words with a name; and new coined names. The proper nouns are translated in following ways: total or partial transcription without transfer of meaning; translating meaning; recreation; replacement of a personal name by another from source language; change of category (from proper nouns to common nouns); and deletion. The translation of names of characters is not their reproduction in the target text. The translator negotiates between the source text and the reader of the target text in order to find out a solution or a compromise after taking into consideration the meaning and the possible function of the names.
