Ignatius of Loyola and Jonathan Edwards are spiritual giants in their era. This study aims to compare their spirituality focused on relationships mentioned by Bradley P. Holt, such as God, self, neighbors, and nature. As a result of this study, we can discover similarities and differences between Ignatius of Loyola and Jonathan Edwards. First, there is a similarity in that they focused on the inner movement, indwelling, and role of the Holy Spirit in terms of their relationship with the Trinity. Edwards' understanding of the Trinity defined the relationship between God and the faithful through the participation of the Eastern Church and the metaphor of the bride and groom. It did not differentiate himself from the immanent-economic Trinity's understanding. Ignatius, on the other hand, focused on the economic Trinity and did not emphasize the metaphor of the bride and groom. Second, there is a similarity in that Ignatius and Edwards reflect on themselves in their relationship and pursue interiority. Because of their different positions and roles in living settings, they are different in the way they pursue interiority. Third, in terms of relations with neighbors, both Ignatius and Edwards expressed their God's experience not only to themselves but also to their neighbors as companionship and service. In that sense, we discover two aspects of spirituality: the balance between inner and external life and individual life and social responsibility. Fourth, in terms of their relationship with nature, both people can see that their attitudes toward nature have changed since they experienced God. Ignatius experienced God's traces and his presence in all nature through "Finding God in all things." Edwards, on the other hand, found that he developed it in his Autobiography and Miscellanies by organizing it a little more theology-based than Ignatius. Through comparing the spirituality of the two spiritual masters of each era, we tried to understand the wholistic spirituality in terms of relationships in the Korean church. I think these attempts have helped promote ecumenical dialogue.

이냐시오 로욜라와 조나단 에드워즈는 각 시대의 영적 거장이었다. 이 연구는 두 사람의 영성에 초점을 맞추어 브레들리 P. 홀트의 4가지 관계성(하나님과의 관계, 자 신과의 관계, 이웃과의 관계 그리고 자연과의 관계)을 중심으로 고찰해 보았다. 이 연 구의 결과, 이냐시오와 에드워즈 사이에는 다음과 같은 유사점과 차이점이 존재한다 는 것을 발견하게 되었다. 첫째, 삼위일체 하나님과의 관계 측면에서 성령의 내주와 역할에 관심을 갖고 내면의 움직임에 집중하였다는 점에서는 서로 유사점을 보인다. 하지만 에드워즈의 삼위일체 하나님 이해는 동방교회의 참여적 요소 및 신랑신부의 은유를 통하여 하나님과 신자와의 관계를 규정하였고, 내재적이며 경륜적인 삼위일체 하나님 이해에 대한 구분을 두지 않은 반면 이냐시오는 경륜적 삼위일체에 강조점을 두었으며 전통적 신랑신부의 은유에 강조점을 두지 않은 면에서 차이를 보였다. 둘째, 이냐시오와 에드워즈는 자신과의 관계에 있어서 자신을 성찰하며 되돌아보면서 내면 성을 추구하였다는 유사점을 발견하게 된다. 둘 사이의 삶의 자리와 역할이 다르므로 내면성을 추구하는 방법에서 서로 차이를 보이고 있다. 셋째, 이웃과의 관계라는 측면 에서 이냐시오와 에드워즈 모두 하나님 체험이 자신에게만 머무른 것이 아니라 이웃 들을 향하여 동역과 섬김으로 표출되었다. 그러한 면에서 영성의 두 가지 측면, 즉 내 면적인 것과 외적생활의 균형 그리고 개인의 삶과 사회적 책임의 조화를 발견하게 된 다. 넷째, 자연과의 관계라는 측면에서 두 사람 모두 회심 이후 자연만물에 대한 태도 와 자세가 바뀌었음을 알 수 있다. 이냐시오는 “모든 것 안에서 하나님 찾기”를 통해 자연 만물 가운데 하나님의 흔적과 임재를 경험하였다. 에드워즈는 이냐시오에 비하 여 이를 조금 더 신학적으로 체계화하여 자서전과 묵상록 등에서 발전시킨 것을 발견 하게 된다. 각 시대의 영적거장인 두 사람의 영성 비교를 통하여 한국교회에서 왜곡 되고, 파편적인 영성이해를 관계성이라는 측면에서 통전적 이해하려고 시도해 보았다. 이러한 시도가 에큐메니칼한 대화를 촉진하는데 도움이 될 것으로 본다.
