In this study, a predictive model of research productivity was developed to compare commonly used research productivity measures―publications and federal research funding. Among the productivity measures, federal research funding was explained most of its variance (83%) by the predictive model. This finding provides empirical grounds for the adoption of externally financed research funding as a state accountability indicator in measuring research productivity. In addition, up to 73% of the variance in research productivity was accounted for by three faculty‐related factors: faculty size, faculty tenure, and nine‐month faculty salary. These three faculty‐related factors were statistically significant across all research productivity measures except faculty size, which was not significantly related to publications per full‐time faculty. One interesting finding from this study is that faculty tenure had consistently negative effects on research productivity

이 논문은 대학 교수의 연구생산성을 예측하는 모형을 개발한 다음, 이를 연구 생산성을 측정하는데 가장 많이 사용되고 있는 측정지표인 '연구출판 실적' 및 '연방정부에서 연구자금을 지원 받은 실적'을 비교한 것이다. 이를 위해 각 변인에 관한 충분한 데이터가 있는 미국 171개 연구중심대학 전체를 연구대상에 포함하여 연구하였다. 연구출판 실적에 관한 데이터는 Institute of Scientific Inquiry (ISI)에서, 연방정부에서 연구자금을 지원받은 실적은 National Science Foundation (NSF)의Integrated Science and Engineering Resources Data System (WebCASPAR)에서, 그리고 기타 대학에 관한 데이터는 미국 국가교육통계센터의Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System (IPEDS)에서 자료를 다운로드 받았다.
실증적인 통계자료 및 이를 활용한 다중회귀분석 결과, 연구생산성을 측정하는 지표 중 연방정부에서 연구자금을 지원 받은 실적이 연구자가 개발한 이론적 연구모형에 의하여 가장 설명이 잘 되는 것으로 나타났다. 연방정부로부터 지원 받은 연구자금의 변량 중 83%가 연구자가 개발한 이론 모형에 의하여 설명된 것으로 나타나는 등 연구자금이 대학단위의 연구에서 연구생산성을 측정하는데 유용한 지표인 것으로 밝혀졌다. 또한, 연구생산성을 예측하는 변수 중 대학 교수와 관련된 변인들의 설명력이 높은 것으로 나타나고 있는데, 대학교수와 관련된 변수(대학교수의 수, 정년보장 교수 수, 교수의 연봉 수준)가 전체 연구생산성의 73% 정도를 설명하고 있는 것으로 나타나고 있다.
이 연구에서 발견한 특징적인 내용 중의 하나는 연구생산성 측정지표를 어떤 지표로 사용하는 것에 관계없이 대학교수의 정년보장이 연구생산성에 부적인 영향을 주는 것으로 나타나고 있다는 점이다. 이 결과는 많은 선행연구와 상반되는 것으로, 이러한 연구결과를 충분히 뒷받침하기 위해서는 앞으로 개별 교수를 대상으로 하여 교수 정년보장이 연구 성과에 미치는 영향에 대한 보다 심도 있는 후속 연구가 필요하다.
