The Knowledge-based society is the society with a high emphasis on knowledge. It focuses on accumulation, creation, sharing, and delivery of knowledge. As university adult education plays an important role in promoting social progress and development by creating and delivering knowledge, it has the indispensible relationship with the knowledge-based society.
The shift of Korean society to the knowledge-based society brings about dramatic changes in higher education system. The percentage of adult students out of the total number of students in the university is increasing rapidly. In this knowledge-based society, the role and function of universities should be expanded. In specific, there needs a grand paradigm shift in which university adult education should be given more responsibilities.
In this study, First, I looked into the definition and major concepts of university adult education. Second, I divided university adult education into a traditional type and a newly developed type and explored the development of each type. Third, I investigated how the function of university adult education has been changed. Fourth, I examined the changing functions of university adult education in the six areas of cyber learning, profit-oriented management, equality in educational opportunities, human resource development, social transformation, and lifelong learning. Lastly, based on my examination. I discussed the problems in function transformation and suggested the future direction of university adult education.

지식기반사회란 지식이 사회발전의 중심이 되는 사회를 말하는 것으로 지식의 축척, 창조, 공유, 전달을 강조한다. 특히 인재 배양을 목적으로 하는 대학교육은 지식을 창조하고 전달하는 중추 조직으로서 사회의 진보와 발전을 촉진시키는 중요한 역할을 할 뿐만 아니라, 지식을 통하여 사회의 발전과 변화에 영향을 주고 영향을 받는 불가분의 관계에 있다. 지식기반사회의 이행은 고등교육체제 전반에 걸쳐 큰 변화와 혁신을 가져오고 있다. 지식기반사회에서 대학의 역할과 기능은 확대 되어져야 하고 대학성인교육을 책임져야 하는 중대한 도전과 변화 속에서 대대적인 패러다임의 전환이 이루어져야 한다.
대학교육이 이제는 젊은이들과 성인들을 위해 개방되어야 하는 시대 속에서 우리는 어떻게 해야 하는가? 대학의 역할은 무엇이고, 대학에서 대학성인교육의 역할과 임무는 무엇인가? 과거 대학성인교육에 관해서는 학술 또는 직업 취향을 위한 학습인가? 전일제( full-time) 혹은 정시제(part-time) 학습인가? 혹은 계속교육으로서 학위 또는 비학위 문제 등에 관한 많은 쟁론과 함께, 대학성인교육이 발전해왔다. 새로운 학생, 새로운 생활양식, 새로운 관념에 의한 새로운 제도가 아니라 할지라도 이제 대학성인교육은 21세기 지식기반사회의 영향을 받아 새로운 형태로 변화 발전해 가고 있다.
본 연구에서는 첫째, 대학성인교육의 정의와 개념을 고찰해 보고, 둘째, 대학성인교육의 발전을 그 실시 방식에 따라 전통형태의 대학성인교육과 신형태의 대학성인교육으로 나누어 살펴보고, 셋째, 대학성인교육의 기능 발전을 고찰해 보며, 넷째, 21세기 지식기반사회에서 대학성인교육의 새로운 기능으로 전환되고 있는 여섯 가지 기능의 방향 즉 가상학습기능, 재무시장기능, 교육기회평등기능, 인력자원개발기능, 사회개조기능, 평생학습기능을 설명하고, 마지막으로 기능 전환 중에서의 문제점을 논의하여 미래 대학성인교육의 기능과 발전 방향을 고찰하여 보았다.
