DengThis paper contemplated on Summer Flowers(夏の花), a representative literary work of Tamiki Hara that illustrates his radiation exposure from the atomic bombing of the U.S. Forces. He does so by showing a clear contrast between usual and unusual and between the living and dead, and by using novelistic expressions that guide readers to ceaselessly perceive time and space of the literary world. First, paying attention to why the opening of the work is dated August 4, 1945, the work is compared with records explaining the air raid situation at the time. The comparison reveals that the time setting and actions of the protagonist, ‘me,’ are inevitable settings arranged meticulously and elaborately based on the historical time. Next, ‘silence’ of the protagonist, ‘me,’ is pointed out to be a symbol of the reality that represents the impossibility of response rather than a deliberate omission of communication by the author. Lastly, the expressive behavior of the author imprinting the movement line of ‘N’ and ‘me’ on the text is analyzed as a function that makes readers draw space in the literary world while checking the map of Hiroshima in their time and space.
