Considering the authority and influence as a public product of elementary social studies textbooks, it can be said that in the text of ‘History of Democratization’ the social context of democracy. In this study, the verbality of systemic functional linguistics was utilized to examine how the text of ‘History of Democratization’ in elementary social studies textbooks has changed. The results of the analysis of participants and processes in the text of From the 7th curriculum to the 2015 revised curriculum are follows. In the case of the 4‧19 Revolution, a participation was emphasized at the point of democratization regardless of changes in the curriculum. Objects rather than subjects of democratization was highlighted in the text of the 5‧18 democratization so that their repression and oppression were criticized. The analysis of the text of June Democratic Uprising have confirmed that the announcement of democratization by a third party, who was neither the subject nor the object of democratization, was narrated repeatedly.

초등 사회 교과서가 가진 공적 산출물로서의 권위와 영향력을 고려하면 ‘민주화의 역사’ 텍스트에는 그 당시 시대가 지향하는 민주주의의 가치와 성격 그리고 실천과 태도에 대한 사회적 맥락이 깊이 담겨있다 고 할 수 있다. 본 연구는 초등 사회교과서 ‘민주화의 역사’ 텍스트에 담겨있는 맥락의 변화를 종단적으로 살 펴보기 위해 과학적 엄밀성에 기반한 체계기능언어학의 동사성을 분석에 활용하였다. 7차 교육과정부터 2015 개정 교육과정까지 ‘민주화의 역사’ 텍스트의 참여자와 프로세스를 분석한 결과 교육과정의 변화와 관 계없이 4·19 혁명의 경우 민주화 주체의 시점에서 참여가 강조되었고 5·18 민주화 운동은 민주화 대상의 억 압이 부각되었다. 6월 민주항쟁은 민주화의 주체도 대상도 아닌 제 3의 참여자에 의해 민주화가 발표되는 서 술이 반복되어 나타나고 있음을 확인 할 수 있었다.
