This Meta-analysis examined research trends in the journal of Research in Social Studies Education using text mining, network analysis, and qualitative analysis. In analyzing every article published in the journal from 2003 to 2019, we investigated the characteristics of research trends and network relations among major research topics. Based on these results, we also suggested directions for future research in the field of social studies education. This study’s findings are as follows. First, there is a quantitative imbalance among the seven major research topics. While the imbalance has been reduced in recent years, the topics considered to be the basis of social studies education such as citizenship and democracy have critically decreased. Second, research on curriculum, textbook, and lesson study is overly isolated. It is important to maintain balance between in-depth research and integrated research by expanding the integrated research strategy for those isolated research topics. Third, it is necessary to expand Meta-analysis for research on social studies education based on new methodological approaches such as big data analysis.

본 연구에서는 텍스트마이닝과 연결망분석 그리고 질적 연구방법을 혼합하여 ‘사회과교육연구’에 대 한 메타분석을 수행하였다. 2003년부터 2019년까지 발행된 모든 논문을 대상으로 하였으며, 연구특성과 주제 간 연결관계를 설명하고 보완이 필요한 연구방향을 제안하였다. 첫째, 사회과교육연구는 연구주제 간 편차 가 존재했고 점차 연구다양성과 영역 간 균형성이 개선되고 있으나 사회과 본질과 관련된 기초연구주제의 약화는 보완될 필요가 있다. 둘째, 교육과정, 교과서, 수업연구 영역이 지나치게 독자적인 영역으로 연구되는 경향이 보이며, 이러한 영역에서 연계성을 가진 통합형 연구의 확대 및 질적 개선이 요구된다. 이를 통해 영역 별 심층 연구와 연계성이 강화된 통합형 연구의 균형을 유지할 필요가 있다. 셋째, 사회과교육 연구 분야에 대 한 빅데이터분석 등 새로운 연구기법을 활용한 메타연구 활성화가 필요하다.
