In connection with the avant-garde art movement and the cultural phenomenon of postmodernism, the plays of the 20th century were developed into various theatrical experiments in the wake of the transformation of perception of art and life. Still in the 21st century, those experiments to break down the boundaries of theatre and life are growing, another theatrical experiments are expanding from the perspective of theatre and education, theatre and therapy, and theatre and society. These experiments are more related to life itself than to theatre as art. To name major ones, there are: Forum Theatre by Augusto Boal, Playback Theatre initiated by Jonathan Fox, and Applied Theater devised by Philip Taylor. Forum Theatre is a creative theater form in which actors and audiences participate at the same rate, in which the audience interrupts directly into the drama and acts on behalf of the actor; Playback Theater is a form of improvisation plays in which people tell stories that actually happen in their lives; and Applied Drama/Theatre is a form of projects in which participants understand and think about issues and solutions to the problems they face in their everyday life. This new style of play is a common way of engaging the play into life and being led by the audience or participants. These plays are called participatory plays, which aim to play a role in enhancing the quality of life of the audience, leaving the passive attitude of waiting for the audience in the theater and entering the scene of ordinary people’s lives, studying their life problems together, dramatizing their stories and seeking solutions.

20세기 세계의 연극은 전위예술 운동과 포스트모더니즘의 문화현상과 연관되어 예술과 삶의 관계에 대한 인식의 전환에 따른 다양한 연극실험들로 전개되었다. 21세기에 들어와서도 여전히 연극과 삶의 경 계 허물기에 따른 연극실험이 지속되고 있는 가운데, 한편에서는 예술로서의 연극형식보다 연극과 교육, 연극과 치료, 연극과 사회라는 관점에서 보다 인간 삶에 직결되는 연극형식에 대한 실험이 확산되어가고 있다. 대표적으로 아우구스또 보알에 의해 처음 시도된 토론연극과 조너선 폭스에 의해 시도된 플레이백 시어터, 필립 테일러에 의해 시도된 응용연극을 들 수 있다. 토론연극은 배우와 관객이 똑같은 비율로 참 가하는 창조적인 연극형태로 관객이 극적 행위 속에 직접 끼어들어 배우를 대신하여 행동하는 연극형식 이고, 플레이백 시어터는 사람들이 삶에서 실제로 일어난 일화를 이야기하면 그 이야기를 그 자리에서 극화하는 즉흥 연극의 한 형식이며, 응용연극은 ‘응용된 연극’으로서 생활 속 공간에서 참여자들이 자신 이 당면한 문제들에 관한 이슈, 사건, 의문 등을 이해하고 해결책을 함께 고민하는 프로젝트형 연극형식 이다. 이러한 새로운 방식의 연극은 공통적으로 연극을 생활 속으로 끌어들이고, 관객 혹은 참여자들이 주축이 되는 방식으로 참여연극이라고 할 수 있다. 참여연극은 극장에서 관객들을 기다리는 수동적인 자 세를 떠나 일반인들의 삶의 현장 속으로 직접 들어가서, 그들의 삶의 문제를 함께 연구하고, 그들의 이야 기를 극화하여 해결책을 모색하면서 관객들의 삶의 질을 현실적으로나 미적으로 고양시키는 역할을 하 는데 목적을 두고 있다. 더불어, 오늘날 우리나라에서 전통적인 연극에 대한 관객들의 관심이 점차적으 로 약화되어가는 현실에 직면하여 그 대안으로서 관객들의 관심을 환기시킬 수 있는 새로운 연극에 대하 여 고찰함으로써 연극문화의 새로운 길을 모색하는데 그 의미를 둔다.
