This paper aims to analyze representation patterns of disability in fulllength children’s stories for the disabled which were written by Lee Geum-yi and Hwang Sun-mi and released in the early 2000s and trace the writers’ consciousness of the disabled. This study targeted Lee Geum-yi’s full-length stories 『She Is Just A Little Different From Me』 and 『My Friend Jae-deok』, and Hwang Sun-mi’s full-length story 『Silent Children』. This study is based on three elements. First, this study analyzed the relationships and the roles of the characters. Second, this study examined the positions of the narrators who describe the events. Third, this study cast light upon the fantasy and the violence expressed in the stories. The study result revealed that when the writers made a representation of disability, they otherized or objectified the disabled. Also, all of the three stories expressed disabled children as passive ones by using nondisabled children around them as narrators and in the meantime, the difficulties of non-disabled children helping disabled children were more emphasized than the pain of disabled children. Above all, the violence in the process of reproducing disability was problematic. The writers readily justified the violence which is not accepted for whatever reason or set disabled children as violence triggers. In addition, they expressed a severe level of violence using animals as substitutes. Although this seems to intend to reproduce the realism-based reality, it is ironic that this makes the pain of disabled people otherized. The intentions of the writers might be good, but for readers, the display of violence represented as a spectacle could vitiate achievements of the stories. Despite this limitation, it can be said that Lee Geum-yi and Hwang Sun-mi’s children’s stories achieved valuable results by helping in improving non-disabled children’s consciousness of disability and paving the way for consideration of children’s stories for the disabled from the perspective of minority literature.

이 논문은 2000년대 초반에 출간된 이금이와 황선미의 장애인동화에 투 영된 작가의 장애인식을 분석하고, 장애의 재현 과정에서 드러난 폭력성을 조명하는 데 그 목적이 있다. 연구 대상은 이금이의 장편동화 『나와 조금 다 를 뿐이야』, 『내 친구 재덕이』, 그리고 황선미의 장편동화 『소리 없는 아이 들』이다. 작품에 내재한 작가의 장애인식을 확인하기 위해 연구는 세 가지 방법으로 진행하였다. 첫째, 등장인물들의 관계와 역할을 분석했다. 둘째, 사건을 서술하는 화자의 위치와 시점의 관계를 살펴보았다. 셋째, 장애의 재 현 과정에서 드러난 폭력성을 조명해보았다. 연구 결과 작가들이 장애를 재현하는 과정에서 의도치 않게 장애인을 타 자화하거나 대상화하고 있는 점을 발견할 수 있었다. 또한 세 편의 작품 모 두 장애아가 아닌 그 주변의 비장애아를 화자로 내세움으로써 장애아를 수 동적인 존재로 표현하고 있으며, 그 과정에서 장애아의 고통보다는 장애아 를 돕는 비장애아의 고충이 부각되었다는 것을 확인할 수 있었다. 무엇보다 문제적인 것은 장애를 재현하는 과정에서 드러난 폭력성이었다. 작가는 어떠한 이유로도 정당화될 수 없는 폭력을 손쉽게 정당화하거나 장 애아를 폭력 유발자로 설정하는가 하면, 동물이라는 대리물을 활용해 강도 높은 폭력성을 구현하기도 했다. 이는 리얼리즘에 기반한 현실의 미메시스 적 재현에 목적이 있는 것처럼 보이지만 그 과정에서 오히려 장애인의 고통 이 대상화되는 것은 아이러니가 아닐 수 없다. 아무리 선한 의도가 있었다 고 해도 결과적으로 독자들에게 남겨진 것이 스펙터클한 풍경으로 재현된 폭력의 전시였다면 소수자에 대한 관심에서 기획된 장애인동화의 의미 또 한 퇴색할 수밖에 없기 때문이다. 연구 대상을 2000년대 초반, 비장애인 작가가 창작한 장애인동화로 삼았 기에 본고의 연구 결과를 한국의 장애인동화 전반에 나타난 장애인식의 문 제로 일반화할 수는 없을 것이다. 그렇지만 장애인동화의 태동기에 한국의 동화작가들이 장애를 어떻게 인식했는지를 확인하고, 무엇보다 장애인동화 에 내재한 폭력성의 문제를 담론화한 것은 본고가 거둔 의미 있는 성과라 하겠다.
