It is difficult to discuss the history of literature without mentioning Lim Sang-won, known as one of the eight great writers during the reign of King Yongjo. In his works, several themes related to the political climate he faced can be found. In the light of this perspective, this study aims to identify the essence of Lim Sang-won’s literature. This study examined various historical records to reconstruct his life and extract the topics and the attributes of his proses. It is suggested is life is aligned with the fierce political dispute between the Noron party and the Soron party. Frequent controversy and the resulting deportation were a reality he had to endure. Yet, he refused to relinquish his political life. As a result, Three themes are implicated in his proses. First, he was never dispirited by his hardship. Second, he underlined the duty as a servant to serve his King and govern the country. Finally, he also emphasized the empowerment of the King to abolish the conflict among the political parties. These themes are cleary recognizable in his works, which attributes to the political atmosphere around him. These themes also functioned as an impetus to create unique prose works of his own.

영조대에 ‘八文章’으로 지목되었던 林象元은 문학사에서 빼놓을 수 없는 산문 작가이다. 그가 남긴 산문을 일별해보면, 그의 정치적 행적과 관련한 몇 가지 주제 의식이 강하게 드러난다. 본고는 이러한 주제 의식에 착목하여 그의 문학 실체를 고찰하고자 하였다. 이를 위해 먼저 그의 ｢年譜｣와 함께 각종 사료에서 발견되는 그의 자취를 추적하여 생애를 재구성하였다. 그리고 이를 토대로 산문의 주제 의식 및 특징을 연계하여 고찰하였다. 그의 생애를 살펴본 결과 그의 삶은 영조대 치열했던 노소간의 당쟁 속에 놓여 있었다. 따라서 잦은 논란과 이로 인한 삭출은 그가 감내해야 하는 현실이었다. 하 지만 그는 끝내 조정을 떠나려 하지 않았다. 이러한 삶의 모습과 관련하여 산문에서는 다음 세 가지 주제 의식을 발견할 수 있었다. 첫째, 불우한 처지에 초연한 삶의 지향, 둘째, 신하로서의 경세 책무 의식, 셋째, 붕당 타파를 위한 군주의 권력 강조이다. 이러한 주제 의식은 다수의 산문에서 뚜렷하게 보이는 동시에 그가 놓인 정치 현실과 맞닿아 있었다. 뿐만 아니라 각 각의 주제 의식은 문학적으로 구현되어 독특한 산문 작품을 낳는 동력이 되었다.
