This paper is a study of the narrative method and its meaning, focusing on the keywords of “gender,” in the shaman song about the Smallpox. In the shaman song, ‘Sagong-Gaksi Sonnim’, ‘KimJangja-Gaksi Sonnim’, and ‘KimJangja’s son-Gaksi Sonnim’ show a confrontation or conflict. Both of these relationships resulted in a “male-female” gender confrontation. On the other hand, 'Gaksi Sonnim-Sagong’s wife', 'Gaksi Sonnim-Noguhalmi', 'Gaksi Sonnim-Kimjangja’s wife', and 'Gaksi Sonnim-Noguhalmi's grandchildren' were all friendly or cooperative in relation to 'female-female' . The different relationships between genders are due to the different roles expected of gender in traditional society. Through the smallpox disease, it was confirmed that in the society at that time, child rearing was dedicated to women, and that the entire household was in charge of men. In particular, even though women were dedicated to nurturing and caring for a family, that was a role in the man's whole authority. Through this epidemic of smallpox, we can see how each gender functioned as a power relationship called gender. Along with this, it was confirmed that smallpox is an epidemic that must be experienced in the child rearing process.

본고는 천연두신 무가를 ‘젠더’라는 키워드를 중심으로 하여 서사 구현 방식과 그 의미를 고찰하여 본 것이다. <손님굿> 무가는 ‘사공-각시손님’, ‘김장자-각시손님’, ‘김장자의 아들-각시손님’이 대결 혹은 갈등 양상을 보여주는데, 이 둘의 관계는 모두 ‘남-녀’라는 젠더 대결로 소급되었다. 이와 달리 ‘각시손님-사공 부인’, ‘각시손님-노고할미’, ‘각시손님-김장자 부인’, ‘각시손님-노고할미 외손주’는 모두 ‘여-여’ 관계로 우호 혹은 협조적인 젠더 양상을 보여준다. 젠더간의 상이한 관계는 전통사회에서 젠더에게 기대했던 역할이 서로 달랐기 때문이다. 천연두라는 질병을 통해 당대 사회에서 아이 양육을 전담했던 젠더는 여성이며 집안의 전권을 담당했던 젠더는 남성이었음을 확인할 수 있었다. 특히 여성이 한 가정 내의 양육과 돌봄을 전담했지만 그 역할은 남성의 전권 안에 포함된 것이었다. 이는 천연두라는 전염병을 통해 성별(Sex)이 어떻게 젠더라는 권력관계로 기능하였는가를 살펴볼 수 있게 해준다. 이와 함께 천연두라는 전염병이 아이 양육 과정에 있어서 반드시 거쳐야 하는 통과의례적인 질병이었음도 확인할 수 있었다.
