The purpose of this study is to consider the cause and development of an uprising that occurred in Danseong, Gyeongnam in 1862 with materials left by Kim Inseop, one of the key figures of the event. Regarding the outbreak of the Danseong Uprising, this author traced the time flow grounded on 『Dangyeilgi(端磎日記)』. Next, with the material called ｢Danja(單子)｣ contained in 『Gamjeongrok(勘定錄)』, this researcher analyzed the matters that the Danseong villagers urged the governmental agency to rectify. Gamjeongrok is mentioned in 『Ganjeongilrok(艱貞日錄)』, Kim Ryeong’s exile diary, so the name has been known until now. This author found it recently and decided to introduce it in this thesis for the first time. Since Dangyeilgi was written in the form of briefly recording events that took place each day, it is possible to know what happened without detailed information. Contrarily, as Gamjeongrok is a book arranging documents related to the Danseong Uprising, we can understand the actual situation of Danseong and the position of its villagers then in detail. Therefore, in considering the cause and development of the Danseong Uprising generally, these two materials are equipped with complementary value and are expected to be employed usefully afterwards. As a result of examining the development of the Danseong Uprising in 1862 and Kim Inseop’s critical mind grounded on two materials, 『Dangyeilgi』 and 『Gamjeongrok』, this study has found an aspect of Kim Inseop in that he considered the mission to be carried out in the late 19th century that was the period of upheaval in the inside and outside of Korea. Although he passed the exam of Mungwa at the age of 20 and held posts like Seonggyungwan Jeonjeok or Saganwon Jeongeon in succession, in the situation that the maternal relatives of Andong Kim’s family were engaged in manipulation of state affairs, he left from government service at the age of 36 and went down to the countryside and spent the rest of his life exploring sciences and teaching his disciples there. Even if he quit being involved in government affairs as one of the officials, he looked squarely at realistic issues that took place in the country and the people’s hardships and never lost his will to practice social justice himself. We can understand that the Danseong Uprising was the very event in which such agony and practice of his came to be expressed symbolically.

이 논문은 『端磎日記』와 『勘定錄』이라는 두 자료를 통해 1862년 경남 단성에서 일어난 항쟁의 원인과 전개 과정을 고찰했다. 단성항쟁이 발생한 과정에 대해선 『端磎日記』에 근거해 시간적 흐름에 따라 추적했다. 다음으로 『勘定錄』을 통해 단성 주민들이 관청에 시정을 촉구한 문제들이 어떠한 것들이었는지 분석했다. 『감정록』은 김령의 유배일기인 『艱貞日錄』에 언급되고 있어 현재까지 그 이름만 알 려졌을 뿐 실존 여부를 알 수 없었는데, 근래에 필자가 발견하여 이 논문에서 처음 소개 했다. 『단계일기』는 冊曆에 매일 일어난 사건을 간략하게 기록하는 형식으로 작성되었 으므로, 어떠한 일이 있었는지는 확인되지만 그 이상 자세한 정보를 알 수 없는 한계가 있다. 이에 비해 『감정록』은 단성항쟁과 관련된 呈文과 題音을 정리한 책이므로, 당시 단성의 현실 상황과 주민들의 입장을 자세하게 파악할 수 있다. 따라서 단성항쟁의 원인 과 전개 과정을 종합적으로 고찰하기 위해 이 두 자료는 상호 보완적인 가치가 있다. 『단계일기』와 『감정록』이라는 두 자료에 근거해 1862년 단성항쟁의 전개 과정과 김인섭의 문제의식을 살펴본 결과, 19세기 후반 국내외의 격변기 속에서 그 시대에 감당 해야 할 사명이 무엇인지를 고민하는 김인섭의 한 단면을 볼 수 있었다. 20세에 문과 급제하여 성균관 전적·사간원 정언 등을 역임했지만, 안동김씨 외척 세력이 정권을 농단 하는 상황에서 관직을 그만두고 낙향하여 평생 향촌에서 학문을 탐구하고 후학을 가르쳤 다. 그러나 조정의 관리로서 공무를 수행하는 일은 그만두었지만, 향촌에서 일어나는 현실적 문제와 백성들의 고통을 직시하고 스스로 사회적 정의를 실천하려는 의지마저 버리지는 않았다. 이러한 고뇌와 실천이 상징적으로 표출된 사건이 바로 단성항쟁이었다 고 이해할 수 있다.
