This paper is focused on the urban formation and transition of Havana during the colonial era. In the meantime, domestic urban research on Latin America has focused on the social and historical background of its formation and development. This study interested in physical characteristics and transition of Havana, which makes it different from existing Latin American urban studies. The purpose of this study is to trace the process of grid and street system around Old Havana from late 17th century to the late 19th century. For the grid system, the transition can be divided into merger, division of the existing grid and the expansion or emergence of public space around the Havana Bay. In the case of the street system, the area of study covers not only the Old Havana but also extended areas beyond the city wall after the 18th century. Until alameda, avenida, calzada and paseo were newly created as promenade and public space in the 18th century, the main street system of Havana was composed of just narrow 'calle' for two hundreds years since 1519 when Havana was placed. The case study of Havana show us that urban system layered through times influences the daily life. It also tells us why in urban morphology, it is needed to consider deeply on not only the present but also the future.

본 논문에서는 식민시대 아바나의 도시형성과 성장에 대해 격자와 거리의 변천에 중점 을 두고 검토하였다. 그동안 라틴아메리카 도시연구는 그 형성과 발달의 사회적·역사적 배경에 중 점을 두고 있었다. 본 연구는 아바나의 격자와 거리라는 물리적 특성에 초점을 두었다는 점에서 기존 라틴아메리카 도시연구와 차별성을 찾을 수 있다. 본 연구의 목적은 아바나의 옛 중심지인 구 아바나(Habana Vieja)를 중심으로 격자 및 거리체계 의 변천 과정에 대하여 살펴보는 것이다. 17세기 후반부터 19세기 후반까지 구 아바나의 격자 변 천 과정은 기존 격자의 합병과 분할, 그리고 아바나 만 인근의 확장 및 공공 공간의 출현으로 나 눌 수 있다. 거리체계의 경우 연구대상 지역은 구 아바나와 18세기 이후 도시 방벽 외부로 확장된 주요 도로를 포함하였다. 구 아바나의 주요 거리체계인 까예(calle)와 도시가 형성된 지 200년이 지나 등장한 아바나 만의 공공 산책로, 그리고 당시 도시 경계였던 방벽을 넘어 새롭게 조성된 알 라메다(alameda), 아베니다(avenida), 깔사다(calzada), 빠세오(paseo) 등의 거리 변화를 알아보 았다. 수백 년 동안 겹겹이 형성된 도시의 물리적 형태가 현재의 일상에 영향을 주는 아바나의 사 례는 도시의 화석이 될 수 있는 도시구조에 대한 고민에서 현재뿐만 아니라 미래를 포함해야 하 는 이유를 말해준다.
