In general, Unamuno's novels are usually understood as a medium to convey his thoughts. However, it is difficult to evaluate his novels collectively because they evolved according to the changes in his outlook on human beings and society, or by his reflections on the genre of novels. If Love and Pedagogy, published in 1902, became a milestone overcoming the 19th century realism of Unamuno's first novel, Peace in War, Mist, published in 1914, is a full-fledged work of reasons for the kind of novel he was pursuing. On the other hand, Three Exemplary Novels and a Prologue, which appeared in 1920, can be seen as a work which continues with his acclaimed work Mist, but also as an important effort to provide a wider consideration on the meaning of human existence in the context of the novel. In Mist, Unamuno recalled the problem of human existence in front of the Creator by means of a meeting between the main character and the writer. Meanwhile, in these exemplary novels based on ‘theory of the novel as life itself’, he turned to the question of whether there is a willingness to become or not to become something regardless of whether it is a real person or a fictional character. In this way, this study explores the meaning of Three Exemplary Novels and a Prologue in Unamuno's views on novel and examines how the existential meaning of human beings, one of the representative issues raised by him, appears in this work.

우나무노의 소설은 그의 사상을 전달하는 매개로서 보통 이해된다. 그런데 그의 소설은 인간과 사회를 바라보는 전망의 변화에 따라 또는 소설 장르에 대한 성찰에 따라 진화하였기에 일괄해서 평가하기는 어렵다. 『사랑과 교육』(1902)이 우나무노의 첫 소설인 『전쟁 속의 평화』에 나 타난 19세기적 사실주의를 극복하는 이정표적인 성격을 가졌다면, 『안개』(1914)는 그가 지향하는 소설에 대한 사유를 본격적으로 담아낸 작품이다. 한편, 『세 편의 모범소설과 하나의 서문』(1920) 은 그의 대표작 『안개』와 연속성을 가지면서도 인간의 존재적 의미에 대해 좀 더 소설적으로 형 상화하려는 노력을 기울인 작품이라고 볼 수 있다. 『안개』에서 우나무노는 작가와 등장인물 간의 만남을 통해 창조주 앞에 선 인간의 존재 문제를 떠올렸다. 반면에 그는 ‘삶 자체로서의 소설론’ 에 기반을 둔 이 모범소설에서는 인간의 존재적 의미를 실재하는 인물인가 허구적인 존재인가에 서 찾지 않고 무엇인가 되려는 또는 되지 않으려는 의지가 있는가 없는가의 문제로 전환하였다. 이렇듯 본 연구는 우나무노의 소설론에서 『세 편의 모범소설과 하나의 서문』이 갖는 의미를 탐색 하고 그가 제기했던 대표적인 논점 중 하나인 인간의 존재적 의미가 이 작품에서 어떠한 방식으 로 나타나는지를 살펴보았다.
