The primary purpose of this article is to introduce Nicholas of Cusa’s Peace of Faith with thorough analyses of the text. Peace of Faith is one of the best known works written by the medieval Christian authors on interreligious dialogue. The work, which appeared immediately after the fall of Constantinople in 1453, depicts a fictional conversation held in heavenly Jerusalem among the seventeen people representing nearly all nations and religions known at the time. The European Christians, overwhelmed by the fear of Islam, vehemently argued for the resumption of the Crusades to take revenge on the invasion of the Turks and check their advance. Against this backdrop, the author wrote this work with a conviction that the solution to the religious conflict is not war but dialogue. For Cusanus, religious conflict results from considering the old customs of each religious tradition as the truth. He thus presents “one religion in a variety of rites (una religio in rituum varietate)” as the central principle for the dialogue for peace among religions. In this article we explore, in light of the philosophical explanations on the conditions and possibilities of human knowledge, presented in the two works of Cusanus, Learned Ignorance (De docta ignorantia, 1440) and On Conjectures (De coniecturis, 1440-1444), how ‘one religion’ and ‘a variety of rites’ aren’t contradictory but can coexist. This coexistence depends on his conception of the variety of rites. He considers rites not as the truth, but as signs of the truth. Just as one truth can be represented by various signs, one religion can be represented by diverse rites. This results from the human condition of knowledge, which is not precise but only a conjecture, and as a consequence, there are diverse points of view on the same reality.
