This paper aims to elucidate the political thought of Coluccio Salutati from a historical viewpoint. In general he has been interpreted as an Janus-like man who wavered between modern republicanism and medieval monarchism. But such an interpretation would be a chronological mistake overly digging into the consistency of a historical figure without considering the conditions in which he lived. As a correction for that, this paper investigates his political thought in the contexts of ‘the war of the Eight Saints’ and ‘the war against Giangaleazzo Visconti.’ It argues that, by finding the source of Florentine liberty in the Roman Republic, he opened a new way of interpreting Roman history. In addition, as well-displayed in his De Tyranno , Salutati looked at the political problem in terms of historical realism rather than of abstract theory and, in doing so, put much emphasis on the security and peace of commonwealth. Consequently, this paper contends that he was less a medieval conservative than a solid humanist realist.

본고는 14세기 후반 피렌체의 서기장이자 최고의 휴머니스트였던 살루타티의 정치사상을 역사적 관점에서 조명하려는 시도이다. 일반적으로 살루타티는 공화 제적 가치에 기초해 인간과 정치에 대한 관념을 설파했지만, 노년에 들어서면서 부터 점차 중세의 기독교적 정치질서로 회귀한 야누스 같은 인물로 해석되고 있다. 하지만 이와 같은 평가는 그가 살았던 시대와 환경을 고려하지 않고, 중 세와 근대라는 기계적인 대립 구도 속에서 한 인물의 일관성에만 과도하게 천 착한 이른바 시대착오적 오류일 수 있다. 이에 따라 본고는 살루타티의 정치적 관념을 ‘여덟 성인의 전쟁’과 ‘대 잔갈레아초 전쟁’이라는 역사적 맥락 속에서 해석한다. 비록 중세 성기 이후의 이탈리아 자치 전통에 뿌리를 두고 공화국의 자유를 개인적 권리보다 정치 공동체의 자치와 독립의 문제로 이해했다고 하더 라도, 살루타티는 고대 공화정 로마에서 피렌체 자유의 연원을 찾음으로써 로마 의 역사를 새롭게 해석하는 첫 길을 열었다. 또한 전제정론에서 잘 드러나듯 이 그는 정치의 문제를 추상적인 이론이 아니라 역사적 사실에 입각해 분석하 면서, 공동체의 안위와 평화를 강조했다. 이 점에서 그는 단순히 중세적 세계관 으로 복귀한 보수주의자라기보다 휴머니즘에 기초한 현실주의자였다.
