“Self-reconciliation” is a holistic theory of gongfu based on the manifestation of the mind noumenon, which contains the meanings of self-cultivation, morality and appreciation of harmony. The three social phenomena, “refined egoists” in college students, folk “craze for sinology” and religious revival show the spiritual status quo of Chinese citizens affected by modernity. How can the benevolence tradition of “self-remediation” balance the three contradictions reflected in the three social phenomena mentioned above and running through modernity: the contradictions between knowledge and wisdom, modern education and tradition, and the sanctity of religion and secularization? It is difficult to solve the dilemma of modernity by merely taking advantage of the Confucian theory. So the practice of Confucianism in contemporary China is indispensable in getting out of the dilemma. This paper tries to illustrate the connection between “benevolence” and Marxism, the principled critique of modernity from the three aspects of emotion, order and virtue, and to seek the ‘historical hole’ for self- reconciliation, so as to make it truly have a China mood.

‘극기복례’는 심성 본체에 기초하여 드러나는 총체적 공부론으로서 修身․立德․貴和 등의 의미를 담고 있다. 대학생의 ‘정교하고 치밀한 이기주의’, 민간의 ‘국학붐’과 종교의 부흥, 이 세 가지 사회현상에는 현대적 영향을 받은 중국국민의 정신의 현 상태가 나타난다. 상술한 세 가지 사회현상 속에 반영되어 있고 현대성 속에 관철되어 있는 것-지식과 지혜의 모순, 현대교육과 전통의 모순, 종교의 신성성과 세속화의 모순을 ‘극기복례’의 仁學 전통으로 어떻게 균형을 이루게 할 수 있는가. 그러나 단지 儒學이론으로는 현대적 곤경을 해결하기 어려우므로 반드시 유학을 중국 현대적 실천으로 옮겨야 한다. 마르크스주의는 현대화에 대해 원칙이 있는 고도의 비판을 가해야 한다. 이 글은 감정, 질서, 미덕 세 가지 방면을 형성하고, 仁學과 마르크스주의의 조화를 실현하는 것을 시도한다. 그리고 ‘극기복례’로 역사적 출구를 찾고 다른 한편으로는 마르크스주의로 진정으로 중국적 정감을 느끼게 하고자 한다.
