This purpose of this study is to examine tombstone-building activities in terms of distinguishing the ‘Our Family’ from the ‘Other Family’ in Hyangchon society and realizing the family identity in order to enjoy the status as Hyangban in the local community. The study examined the activities of building ancestral tombstones, focusing on Song Jeong-ak’s journal 󰡔Seohengrok󰡕, a descendant of parent-child Song Dae-rib and Song-Chim known as the loyalty of Goheung. The research clearly showed a series of processes including the epitaph compilation, preparation of the typeface, the receipt and transportation of the stone, inscribing an epitaph, etc. In addition, descendants’ tombstonebuilding activities were carried out within the network of Joseon’s political environment, national policy, faction and community. Based on the result of the research, the 18C tombstone-building activities shown in the Hyangban Family were in correspondence to the movement of the state and bureaucrats to institutionalize the “Loyalty” ideology and the recognition of the central Noron Faction. That was also in correspondence to the activities by the descendants who wanted to be key members in that social structure.

본 연구는 향촌 사회에서 ‘우리 가문’과 ‘타 가문’을 구별 짓고 지역공동체에서 향반으 로서의 위세를 누리기 위한 가문정체성의 구현이라는 측면에서 묘비 건립 활동을 살펴보 고자 하였다. 이에 고흥 지역의 충절인사인 송대립과 송침 부자의 후손 송정악이 기록한 『서행록』이라는 일기자료를 중심으로 선조의 묘비 건립 활동을 검토하였다. 이를 통해 비문의 찬술, 書體의 준비, 석재의 수취, 석재의 운반, 비문의 印出 등 일련의 과정을 생생하게 밝힐 수 있었다. 또한 후손의 묘비 건립 활동을 당시 조선의 풍조, 국가 시책, 학맥, 지역공동체라고 하는 관계망 속에서 복합적으로 다루었다. 이로써 18세기 향반가 의 묘비건립 활동이 ‘忠’ 이념의 고양을 제도화 하려는 국가 및 관료의 움직임과 중앙 노론 학맥의 공인, 이러한 사회 구조 속에서 핵심 성원이 되려는 후손의 활동이 조응하면 서 이루어졌음을 밝혔다.
