The bulbokjang practice, a unique ritual of Korean Buddhism that had been transmitted to date since the Joseon period, was designated as a National Intangible Cultural Property in 2019. This study examines the lineage of bulbokjang practice at Baegyangsa and Master Mukdam Seongu, who was ordained and active at Baegyangsa, as the reviver of the bulbokjang practice. The ritual lineage of bulbokjang at Baegyangsa can be reconstructed as follows:Yeondam Yuil (1720-1799), Hwadam Beomnin (1843-1902), Geumhae Gwanyeong (1856-1937), Mukdam Seongu (1896-1981), and Dowol Sujin (b. 1948). The bulbokjang practice still retains its original form since Master Mukdam adhered to the traditional bulbokjang practice. He preserved and passed on the traditional bulbokjang practice amidst the reformation of Korean Buddhism, which often resulted in simplification of Buddhist rituals. My investigation also reveals that the bulbokjang practice was transmitted among masters who had close connection to the Baegyangsa lineage. The lineage of bulbokjang practice has not received due attention in previous studies. My examination not only provides a corrective to past scholarship, but also casts new light on Baegyangsa’s bulbokjang lineage and Master Mukdam’s practice of bulbokjang.

조선시대 이래 계승되어 온 한국의 독특한 불교 의식인 불복장 작법이 2019년에 국가무형문화재로 지정되었다. 이에 본고에서는 백양사 불복장 작법의 계보를 제시하고, 백양사 출신의 묵담성우 대종사가 불복장 작법을 전승한 중흥조라는 점을 밝혔다. 백양사 불복장 작법의 계보는 연담유일(1720~1799) → 화담법린(1843~1902) → 금해관영(1856~1937) → 묵담성우(1896~1981) → 도월수진(1948~현재)으로 이어 진다. 이 계보에서 묵담대종사가 전통적인 불복장 작법을 고집하지 않았더라면 오늘날 불복장 작법은 전통적인 방법으로 전승되지 못했을 것이다. 왜냐하면 불교의식 간소화라 는 근대화의 바람에서 묵담대종사는 전통적인 방식을 고수하였기 때문이고, 또 불복장의 전승은 백양사 계보 이외에는 별다른 흔적을 확인하기 어렵기 때문이다. 필자가 백양사 불복장 작법의 계보를 정리하고 중흥조로서 묵담대종사를 내세우는 것은 아직까지 불복장 작법의 계보에 대한 체계적인 연구가 이루어지지 않았을 뿐만 아니라 잘못 이해되고 있는 측면이 있기 때문이다. 본고에서 그러한 오해를 바로잡고 불복장 작법 전승의 역사적 흐름을 정리하였다.
