This paper looked into the youth movement in Suncheon during the first half of the 1920s, focusing on organizing Suncheon Gidok Myeonrye Cheongnyeonhoe (Young People’s Society of Christian Endeavor in Suncheon) and its activities and personal relationship between the Suncheon Gidok Myeonrye Cheongnyeonhoe and Suncheon Cheongnyeonhoe (Young People’s Society in Suncheon). This research can contribute to understanding how persons who were active in the above organizations engaged in political and social movements in the conflict between the left and right wing after Korean liberation. The Suncheon Gidok Myeonrye Cheongnyeonhoe was organized on October 15, 1918 during the growth of Suncheon Eup Church (Church in the town of Suncheon). It was created in the considerably early period on the national level and stayed in existence during the beginning stage. In the early 1920s, the Suncheon Gidok Myeonrye Cheongnyeonhoe renewed its organization and unfolded activities around evangelism and an enlightenment campaign. Suncheon Cheongnyeonhoe led the youth movement in Suncheon with the Suncheon Gidok Myeonrye Cheongnyeonhoe. These organizations were a social movement in the Suncheon area, having close ties to each other in terms of personal organization or activities. However, their relationship began to collapse around the year 1923. The Suncheon Cheongnyeonhoe changed its organizational line embracing socialism and it triggered rearrangement of both organizations’ relationship. Members who participated in the youth movement in the Suncheon area in the 1920s emerged as leading figures of each camp during the conflict of the left and right wings after the liberation. Kim Yang Soo, Park Yeong Jin, Han Tae Seon and other members joined in the right wing camp. Lee Chang Soo, who moved his activity base to the Yeosoo area, was one of the representative figures in the left wing. Lee Yeong Min or Kim Gi Soo, who did not join the staff of Suncheon Gidok Myeonrye Cheongnyeonhoe - active in Suncheon Cheongnyeonhoe, took part in the Suncheon People’s Committee.

1920년대 전반기 순천지역의 청년운동을 순천기독면려청년회의 결성과 활동, 그리 고 순천기독면려청년회와 순천청년회와의 인적관계에 초점을 맞춰 살펴보았다. 이 연구 는 순천기독면려청년회와 순천청년회에서 활동했던 인물들이 해방 후 순천지역사회, 더 나아가 전남동부지역사회 전면에 등장하여 좌우대립의 갈등구조 속에서 정치·사회운동 을 전개한 면모를 파악하는데도 기여할 수가 있다. 순천기독면려청년회는 순천읍교회가 성장을 거듭하는 과정에서 1918년 10월 15일 에 결성된 청년조직이다. 전국적인 차원에서 상당히 빠른 시기에 결성되었으며, 결성 초기에는 명맥만을 유지하다가 1920년대 초에 이르러 조직을 일신하고 전도와 계몽활 동에 중점을 두어 활동을 전개해 나갔다. 순천기독면려청년회와 더불어 순천지역 청년운 동을 이끌어간 조직은 순천청년회였다. 두 조직은 인적구성이나 활동상으로 볼 때 서로 관계를 두텁게 유지하면서 지역사회운동을 전개해 나갔다. 그러나 이러한 관계는 1923년을 전후한 시기에 무너지기 시작하였다. 순천청년회가 사회주의사상을 수용하면서 조직 노선을 변화시켜 나간 것이 관계 재정립의 계기가 되었다. 1920년대 순천지역에서 청년운동을 전개한 세력은 해방 이후 좌우대립의 상황 속에 서 각기 양대 진영의 중심인물로 부상했다. 김양수, 박영진, 한태선 등은 우익진영에 가담하였으며, 1930년대 여수지역으로 활동기반을 옮겨갔던 이창수는 좌익계 대표 중 한 사람이었다. 순천기독면려청년회 임원으로 참여하지 않았지만 순천청년회에서 활동 한 이영민이나 김기수는 순천인민위원회에 참여했다.
