This paper analyzes the determinants of Korean outbound foreign direct investments(OFDIs) using a panel data set of FDIs across the twenty-nine countries during the period 2000-2012. We adopt a modified "gravity model" which incorporates not only the standard gravity variables such as national economies of scale and geographical distance, but also the variables of cultural distance and FTA. Results of the analysis show that the county market potential variable such as GDP has a positive impact and the geographical distance has a negative impact on Korean OFDIs, as anticipated. On the other hand, FTA has a positive impact on Korean OFDIs, but cultural distance does not play an important role in Korean OFDIs. These results suggest that the gravity model is useful to explain not only the pattern of trade, but also the pattern of FDI.

본 연구에서는 국가 간 무역 흐름에 영향을 미치는 요인을 설명하기 위해 개발된 중력모형 (Gravity Model)에 의거하여 우리나라 FDI 흐름에 영향을 미치는 요인에 대한 분석을 시도하였다. 2000년도부터 2012년까지 13년간 29개국에 대해 수행된 우리나라 FDI에 대한 분석결과 예상했던 대로 피투자국의 시장잠재력을 나타내는 GDP는 우리나라 FDI에 긍정적인 영향을 미치는데 반해, 국가간 거리는 부정적 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타났다. 한편, 자유무역협정 (FTA) 체결은 FDI를 촉진시키는 것으로 나타났으나, 문화적 거리는 예상과는 달리 그 영향력이 미비한 것으로 나타났다. 본 연구결과는 중력모형이 무역 흐름뿐만 아니라 FDI 흐름을 설명하는데 어느 정도 유효함을 입증하는 것이다.
