This study examines the internationalization process of foreign manufacturing subsidiaries in China from the perspective of capabilities evolution. While most previous studies have analyzed the internationalization process at an overall firm or subsidiary level, this study conducted analysis of capability at the functional level (manufacturing, purchasing, marketing, and R&D).
By synthesizing the existing stage theory and dynamic capability view, and with a focus on the scope of change in functional activities, we suggest a three-stage model of capabilities evolution in the internationalization of automotive part manufacturers: the capabilities-transfer stage, the capabilities-development stage, and the capabilities-exploitation stage. Using this three-stage model, we find that subsidiaries evolve in the course of interactions with internal and external network actors, the roles and contributions of which change with the stage of development.
In our between-case study, we confirm that the level of capability attained by each subsidiary varies with the difference in types and degrees of network interactions. We conclude with some propositions concerning how to develop subsidiaries’ capabilities for systematic internationalization, stage by stage.

본 연구의 목적은 중국에 진출한 외국 제조업체의 국제화 과정을 현지법인의 역량 진화 관점에서 설명하는 것이다. 국제화 과정에 관한 기존의 연구들이 기업 혹은 현지법인 전체를 분석단위로 설정한 반면, 본 연구에서는 현지법인의 기능활동(생산, 구매, 판매, R&D)을 기본 단위로 설정 하였다.
국제화 과정에 관한 기존의 단계이론과 동태적역량 이론을 토대로, 현지법인의 기능활동 변화의 관점에서, 현지법인의 국제화 과정을 3가지 특징적인 단계(역량이전, 역량발전, 역량이용)로 구 분하여, 이를 사례연구 대상인 자동차 부품업체들의 현지법인에 적용 하였다.
3단계 모형을 통해 분석한 결과, 현지법인은 내부네트워크와 외부네트워크 구성원들과의 지속적인 상호작용 과정을 통해 진화하며, 네트워크 구성원들의 역할과 기여도는 역량발전 단계에 따라 달라짐을 확인 할 수 있었다. 또한 업체들 간의 비교분석을 통해 현지법인들의 역량은 네트워크 구성원들과의 상호작용의 유형과 정도의 차이에 따라 다른 수준에 도달하게 됨을 규명 하였다. 마지막으로 사례분석 결과를 기초로 현지법인의 역량진화가 단계별로 어떻게 변화하는 지에 관한 다수의 가설을 제시하였다.
