Segmenting the US Consumer Market by Consumer Ethnocentric Orientations
초록
영어
As the trade protectionism expands there is a growing need for research on consumer ethnocentrism to provide guidelines for global companies making strategic decisions. This study aims to segment the U.S. consumer market based on the consumers’ ethnocentric orientations, such as national identity, national pride, national superiority, and consumer ethnocentrism, and to analyze differences among the segments. A nationally representative dataset from 2013 U.S. General Social Survey by NORC(National Opinion Research Center) of University of Chicago and ISSP(International Social Survey Programme) was used. It was found that the U.S. market is composed of four segments: ‘patriotic ethnocentrists,’ ‘closed utilitarians,’ ‘objective neutralists’, and ‘nation-centric globalists,’ and those segments are significantly different in demographic and ethnocentric characteristics. Patriotic ethnocentrists are old and middle-low income consumers, who are very proud of the international achievements and domestic social systems of the U.S., and show the highest level of consumer ethnocentrism. Closed utilitarians are the oldest and lowest income consumers, unsatisfied with the country’s situations, and not likely to be ethnocentric. Objective neutralists are young, middle-high incomers who are neutral to consumer ethnocentrism. Finally, nation-centric globalists are highly educated and the highest income consumers who are least likely to be ethnocentric; however, they have a strong sense of superiority to their country. This study contributes to expanding the scope of consumer ethnocentrism research and to providing strategic implications for foreign companies in the U.S.
