Although additional investments have higher proportion than new investments by Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) in Korea, there has been lack of interests and studies in this issue. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to conduct survival analysis on the factors affecting the decisions of additional investments by foreign companies in Korea by using the data from 1990 through 2014 published by Korea Trade-Investment Promotion Agency (KOTRA) in order to reflect the change of time and condition by properly responding to the point of additional investment juncture for each foreign company. This study largely classified the determinants affecting the additional investments into factors reflecting the unique characteristics of the individual foreign companies and those reflecting the characteristics of the industries they belong to. The results of analysis are as follows; First, while the growth (rate) of an industry did not have significant effect on additional investments, the growth (rate) of each company had significantly positive (+) effect. Second, while the profitability of an industry had positive effect on additional investments, profitability of each company did not have significant effect. Third, the lower the stability of an industry was, the more positive effect on the additional investments while company-specific stability did not have significant effect. Fourth, the higher the productivity of each company was, the more positive effect on additional investments. The above results indicate that additional investments by foreign companies are highly likely to be implemented when the productivities of their subsidiaries' are high and have high level of growth potential. In addition, the results also indicate that if the industries to which the subsidiaries belong have high profitability even when the current industries are not stable, the companies tend to make bold investments in the growing industries.

한국에 대한 외국인 직접투자 중 신규투자보다 증액투자의 비중이 더 높음에도 불구하고 이에 대한 관심과 연구가 부족한 실정이다. 이에 본 연구는 한국에 대한 외국인 추가투자 결정에 영향을 미치는 요인을 파악하기 위해 KOTRA(대한무역투자진흥공사)의 1990∼2014년간의 자료를 사용하여 생존분석을 수행하였다. 생존분석을 사용한 것은 외국인기업별 추가투자 시점을 정확히 대응하여 시간과 상태의 변화를 반영하기 위해서이다. 본 연구에서는 추가투자에 영향을 미치는 요인은 크게 외국인기업 고유의 특성과 해당 기업이 속한 산업의 특성을 반영하는 요인으로 구분하였다. 분석결과를 정리하면 다음과 같다. 첫째, 추가투자여부에 산업별 성장성은 유의한 영향을 미치지 못한 반면, 기업별 성장성은 유의한 정의 영향을 미쳤다. 둘째, 산업별 수익성은 추가투자에 긍정적인 영향을 미친 반면, 기업별 수익성은 유의한 영향을 미치지 못하였다. 셋째, 산업별 안정성은 낮을수록 추가투자에 긍정적인 영향을 미치는 반면, 기업별 안정성은 유의한 영향을 미치지 못하였다. 넷째, 기업별 생산성은 높을수록 추가투자에 긍정적인 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타났다. 이상의 결과는 외국인 추가투자는 자회사의 생산성이 높고 성장성이 높을 때 추진될 가능성이 높음을 의미한다. 또한 자회사가 속한 산업이 높은 수익성을 갖고 있고 성장 중인 산업이라면 현재 산업의 안정성이 낮더라도 투자를 감행함을 시사한다.
