This study searching the time and characteristics of the Yesan Samyeonbul(禮山四面佛) through the form of the four-sides Buddha statue and the dressing method of double Kasaya(袈裟). Furthermore, this study demonstrated that these features reflected the exchange between Baekje(百濟) and Northern and Sui(隋) Dynasties of China. Yesan Samyeonbul was built on a transportation route from Baekje to China, and also on the daily route of residents. In other words, it was the Buddhist statue built in a public place. Middle ages in China, the four-sides Buddha statues with public character were popular in the northern area. A south-facing Buddha Image of Yesan Samyeonbul dressed "y-shaped underwear and double Kasaya. This type of dress was popular in Chang'an(長安), the capital of Sui Dynasty. From the position of its establishment, the form of Buddhist costume and the shape of four-sides Buddha statue, Yesan Samyeonbul is showing the characteristics of Buddhist art in the Northern and Sui Dynsaties. That is, Yesan Samyeonbul reflected the cultural exchanges between Baekje and the Northern and Sui Dynasties from the end of the sixth century to the beginning of the seventh century.

본 연구는 ‘四面像’의 형식, 그리고 ‘y자형 內衣와 二重 袈裟’라는 새로운 착의법을 통해 백제 예산사면상의 성격과 기능 및 제작 시기를 살펴보고, 나아가 이런 특징이 당시 백제와북조, 특히 隋와의 적극적인 교류를 반영하고 있음을 밝혔다. 예산사면상은 원래 전각 안에 봉안된 사면불로, 백제의 對中國 교통로이자, 당시 주민들이주거지인 山城과 주변 농경지를 오가는 길목에 건립되어 있었다. 즉 예산 사면상은 교통로상에 건립된 공공적 성격의 불교조상이다. 중국에서 이런 공공적 성격의 불교조상이나 건축물은 天宮, 혹은 寶塔 등으로 불렸으며, 남조가 아닌 6세기 후반의 북조에서 널리 성행했다. 예산사면상의 남면불은 ‘y자형 내의’를 입고, 그 위에 雙領下垂式 가사와 ‘凉州式 편단우견’이라 불리는 변형편단우견의 가사를 이중으로 겹쳐 입었다. 이와 같은 복제는 수나라 도성 長安 불교조각의 특징이다. 6세기 말~7세기 초 백제는 수나라에 여러 차례 사신을 파견했는데, 예산사면상에 출현하는 중국 중앙양식의 출현은 이와 같은 대중국 교류를 반영한 것이라 할 수 있다. 이처럼 예산사면상은 백제의 북조와의 적극적인 교류를 잘 보여주는 물질자료이며, 나아가 기존의 남조 문화 경도 현상을 탈피해 새롭게 북조문화를 능동적으로 수용했던 백제인들의 문화적 태도를 잘 보여주는 사례이다.
