The purpose of this paper is to identify the modern character of encyclopedias of Northeast Asia from the 17th to 19th centuries. The encyclopedia of Northeast Asia included in this study is Wang Gi(王圻)’s 『SamJaeDoHoe(三才圖會)』, Seo Jeong(徐鼎)’s 『MoSiMyeongMulDoSeol(毛詩名物圖說)』, Delasima Lyoan(寺島良安)’s 『WaeHanSamJaeDoHoe(倭漢三才圖會)』, Yu Hui(柳僖)’s 『MulMyeongGo』. The method of research focuses on the language and descriptive aspects used in these wills and compares them with each other, for example, and derives a modern character common to them. The research results are as follows. First, Systematic organization of words through the names of things. Second, Bilingualism and interest in the native language. Third, Ekphrasis commentary. Fourth, Influx and transformation of foreign culture based on classics. In the end, the naming of objects through the representative encyclopedias of Northeast Asia from the 17th century to the 19th century is inherited to the language organization through the newspaper of the modern enlightenment.

본 논문은 17세기부터 19세기까지 동북아시아의 대표적 유서류의 전 통 안에서 근대적 성격을 도출하는 데 목적이 있는 시론(試論)이다. 여기에 해당되는 유서류로 중국 왕기의 『삼재도회』와 서정의 『모시명물도설』, 일본 데라시마 료안의 『왜한삼재도회』, 조선 유희의 『물명고』를 고찰하였다. 연구 방법은 이들 유서에 사용된 언어와 묘사적 측면에 주 목하여 실례를 들어 상호 비교하고, 이들에 공통된 근대적 성격을 도출 하는 것이다. 그 결과 ‘물명(物名)을 통한 말글의 체계적 정리’, ‘양층 언어 현상과 자국어에 대한 관심’, ‘에크프라시스(ekphrasis)적 해설’, ‘고전에 기반을 둔 외래문물의 유입과 변용’이란 근대적 성격들을 확인할 수 있었다. 동의어, 유의어, 어원의 차이, 의미가 유사한 단어의 목록과 분석이란 서술 체계를 통해 ‘물명을 통한 말글의 체계적 정리’를 확인할 수 있었고, 한자 및 자국어에 해당하는 한글과 일본어로 물명을 구분하여 제시하고 활용한 점을 통해 ‘양층 언어 현상과 자국어에 대한 관심’을 살펴볼 수 있었으며, 시각적인 것을 정밀하게 문자로 표현하는 방식을 통해 지식을 대중에게 전달하는 근대적 해설과 관련된 ‘에크프라시스(ekphrasis)적 해설’ 을 확인할 수 있었다. ‘고전에 기반을 둔 외래문물의 유입과 변용’은 근대 계몽기 지식인에 의한 말글 정리 작업의 기저에 동북아시아 유서가 자리 잡고 있음을 확인시켜 주는 요인이라고 할 수 있다.
