In this paper, I have examined how the daughter-in-law's appearance in the story of is extended and modified in the new novel of First of all, I revealed that the daughter-in-law's discourse of the story of is inherent in the core narration of . The narration of Kim-seungji’s wife in the novel is very similar to the story of the daughter-in-law who broke up her family by cutting off guests in the tale. The reason is that Kim-seungji’s wife finally fell to a daughter-in-law who ruined her family by killing Chuncheonjip who was both her husband's concubine and a guest of her family. Next, I have revealed that a variety of the daughter-in-law’s images expanded metaphorically and the daughter-in-law’s desire projected metonymically among the realities of the day is well made up in the novel. The daughter-in-law’s images which are metaphorically expanded through Kim-seungji’s wife, Chuncheonjip and a needlewoman appear in the novel. Various aspects of her relationship with the inside members of her family which did not appear specifically in the narration was able to be identified through the images of the daughter-in-law. Also the realities(time, space, modern elements and etc) of the day were projected metaphorically in the novel. The realistic desire and the aspects of the relationship with the outside world of the daughter-in-law who lived in the transition period of the pre-modern and modern times were confirmed through the narration of Jeomsun. is meaningful in that it expanded and transformed the story of , which is a traditional narration, suitably to the realities of the day and modernized the daughter-in-law's discourse.

본 논문에서는 신소설 <귀의성>에서 <며느리의 손님 끊기> 설화 속 며느리의 모습이 어떻게 확장, 변형되어 나타나는지를 살펴보았다. 우선 <귀의성>의 핵심 서사에 설화 <며느리의 손님 끊기>의 며느 리 담론이 내재되어 있음을 밝혔다. 소설 속 김승지 부인의 서사는 설화 에서 손님을 끊어서 집안을 망하게 만들었던 며느리 이야기와 매우 유 사하다. 김승지 부인은 남편의 첩이자 집안의 손님인 춘천집을 죽임으 로써 결과적으로 집안을 망하게 만든 며느리로 전락하기 때문이다. 다음으로 소설에 은유적으로 확장된 다양한 며느리의 모습과 당대의 현실 속에 환유적으로 투사된 며느리의 욕망이 잘 짜여 있음을 밝혔다. 소설 속에는 김승지 부인뿐만 아니라 춘천집, 침모 등 은유적으로 확장 된 며느리의 모습이 나타난다. 이러한 며느리의 모습을 통해 설화에는 구체적으로 나타나지 않았던 며느리와 집안 내부와의 다양한 관계 양상 을 확인할 수 있었다. 또한 소설에는 구체적인 시간과 공간, 근대적 요 소 등 당대의 현실이 환유적으로 투사되어 있었다. 전근대와 근대의 과 도기를 살아가는 며느리의 현실적인 욕망과 외부와의 교류 양상을 점순 이의 서사를 통해 확인할 수 있었다. <귀의성>은 전통 서사인 <며느리의 손님 끊기> 설화를 당대의 현 실에 맞게 확장하고 변용하면서 며느리 담론을 현재화하였다는 측면에서 의의가 있다.
