The objective of this study is to review Donghak’s life philosophy based on its canons and through modern interpretation of it to offer some suggestions for contemporary development of Donghak. Donghak’s life phiosophy needs to be formulated as practical ehics. The main contents of the study are as follows: First, summarized Donghak’s life philosophy as serving god inside me, three kinds of serving (heaven, people, and material), eating heaven as heaven, and pure water. Secondly, tried to re-interpret Donghak’s life phiosophy through the views of Lee Don-wha, Jang Il-soon, and Yoon No-Bin. Finally, based on these results offered some suggestions for contemporary development of Donghak. The conclusions of the study are as follows: First, Donghak can be summarized as a philosophy of life, and in order to realize life philosophy one has to explore its practical ethics. Secondly, Donghak’s life philosophy can be chracterized as a free life, a cooperating life, a co-existing life, and a liberating life. Finally, the study suggested as Donghak’s practical ethics the perspective of others, the establishment of the concept of locality, and the restoration of community.

이 연구의 목적은 동학의 생명사상을 동학 경전에 의해 정리하고 그에 대한 현대적 해석을 통하여 동학의 시대적 확장성을 위한 몇 가지 제언을 하는 데 있다. 동학의 생명사상은 실천윤리로서 정립될 필요가 있다. 연구 내용은 다음과 같다. 첫째, 동학의 생명사상을 시천주, 삼경, 이천식천, 청수로 정리하였다. 둘째, 동학의 생명사상을 이돈화, 장일순, 윤노빈의 시각을 통해서 재해석하려고 하였다. 셋째, 이를 근거로 동학의 시대적 확장성을 위한 몇 가지 제언을 하였다. 연구 결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 동학은 생명사상으로 요약할 수 있으며, 생명사상이 구현되기 위해서는 실천윤리가 모색되어야 한다. 둘째, 동학의 생명사상은 자유로운 삶, 협력하는 삶, 공생하는 삶, 해방하는 삶으로 구체화될 수 있다. 셋째, 동학의 실천윤리로서 타자의 시각, 로컬리티 개념의 확립, 그리고 공동체 회복 등을 제시했다.
