I would like to extract the characteristics of colors used by Jeff Koons with focusing on the 'Celebration' series of his works through examining and analyzing how colors were used and feature of the materials were characterized with nine public sculptures. I will analyze his work as a system of color combined with texture and a system in which the various perspectives and modes of public art have and how the joys presented by depicted color are communicated to audience. Through this, I will examine from the color-use perspective that the current public sculpture is an art with color medium that can convey the concept of work more accurately through color as well as shape. Jeff Koons gives life to his work by fabricating huge pieces of bright, shiny kitsch souvenirs, toys and jewelry in his "Celebration" series produced in stainless steel with mirror-finish surfaces. Reflective and brightly colored surface coincide with the concept of creator and become an important tool for actively expressing his workmanship. Therefore, by studying Koon's work which is color centered, we analyze the color characteristics especially focusing on the public sculpture of commercial Neo Pop Art and its relationship with public space which promotes kitsch culture. I will further examine the meaning and value of public sculpture by looking at the characteristics of color to see how public sculpture, which is thoroughly based on popularity, could be acquired public attention and communicated with the public.

제프 쿤스의 공공조각에 나타난 색채의 특성을 그의 작품 중‘Celebration’시리즈를 중심으로 총 9개의 공공조각을 대상으로 색채사용방식과 재질에서 나타나는 특성을 살펴보고 분석함으로써 쿤스 의 색채사용특징을 추출해보고자 한다. 공공 미술이 가지는 다양한 관점과 전달방식, 그리고 색이 주는 즐거움이 대중에게 전달되는 체계와 질료와 합쳐진 색의 체계로서 그의 작품을 분석하려 한다. 이를 통해 지금의 공공 조각이 형상뿐만 아니라 색채를 통하여 보다 정확히 작품의 개념을 전달할 수 있음을 확인함으로써 공공조각에 있어 색채 또한 중요한 매개임을 살펴보고자 한다. 쿤스는 ‘Celebration’시리즈의 밝고 빛나는 키치적인 기념품, 장난감, 장신구들로 이루어진 거대한 조각들을 스테인리스라는 재료의 특성을 잘 살려 가공하고 채색함으로써 작품에 생명력을 부여한다. 반짝이며 가벼운 색채는 작가의 개념과 맞물리며 그의 작품성을 적극적으로 표현하는 중요한 도구가 된다. 따라서 색채를 중심으로 하는 쿤스의 작품을 분석함으로써 키치 문화를 내세우는 상업적 네오 팝 아트의 공공조각과 공공 공간과의 관계를 중심으로 한 색채 특성을 분석해 본다. 철저히 대중성을 바탕으로 제작된 공공조각이 어떻게 공공성을 획득하고 대중과 소통하게 되는지 색채가 가진 특성을 통해 알아봄으로써 공공조형물이 지닌 색의 의미와 가치 또한 살펴보고자 한다.
