The novella Nutcracker and the Mouse King (hereinafter referred to as The Nutcracker), written by E. T. A. Hoffmann, a German Romantic author, is well-known as a tale of childhood adventure, targeting children as a main audience. However, it is also dubbed one of the classic fairy tales for adults in the sense that the godfather who represents the adult society appears; and the way that children have changed is seen through the eyes of an adult. The original work has been utilized and converted to a variety of media through a One Source Multi-Use (OSMU) strategy, resulting in a profit. One of the famous examples is The Nutcracker ballet, performed by New York City Ballet annually. On top of this, the story is cinematized as The Nutcracker and the Four Realms by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures, which was released in 2018. This paper aims to explore the extensibility of the original content, The Nutcracker, and find out which aspects of the content allow an easy adaptation. Through an analysis of the original work and film, it was found that there is a difference in the relationship between Drosselmeyer, the godfather who shows features of Romanticism, and Marie (Clara in the film), the protagonist. In addition, a frame narrative technique using in the original work plays a key role in organizing the story. The film adopted this technique so as to distinguish the world of motherhood from that of fatherhood and create a new antagonist. Furthermore, in the process of converting the original story to another medium (namely, the film), antiquated ideas of the time were drastically modified. It was also found that media conversion leads to an interaction among different types of media—for instance, some features of The Nutcracker ballet performance later affect the film. Of course, there may be a critical view that the mainstream culture serves as a tool for solidifying the existing social norms and consolidating the established order. However, it is still worth understanding how the original cultural content is retold in other media. By doing so, this paper reaches a conclusion that creating a discourse on The Nutcracker as a ‘problematic work’ needs to be a common goal for scholars of our time.

낭만주의 작가 호프만의 작품인 『호두까기 인형』은 아동을 독자 대상으로 삼은 동화이지만, 성인사 회를 대변하는 대부가 등장하고, 아이들이 변화하는 모습을 어른의 눈을 통해 관찰, 전달한다는 점에서 성인들을 위한 고전 동화로도 읽히고 있다. 특히 이 작품은 OSMU(One Source Multi-Use)로서 다양한 매체 전환전략을 통해 많은 수익을 창출하고 있다. 대표적으로는 뉴욕시티발레단에 의해 매년 상연되 는 발레 공연 <호두까기 인형>이 있으며, 2018년에는 디즈니에 의해 <호두까기 인형과 4개의 왕국>이 라는 영화로도 제작되었다. 본고는 이러한 원천 콘텐츠로서 『호두까기 인형』 이야기가 지닌 확장성에 주목하여, 어떠한 차별적 특징이 이 콘텐츠의 매체 전환을 용이하게 만들었는지에 주목하였다. 우선, 낭만주의 특질을 지닌 인물인 대부 드로셀마이어의 캐릭터와 주인공인 마리(영화의 경우 클라라)와의 관계 양상에서 특징을 포착할 수 있었다. 또한, 기존 이야기의 액자식 구성 또한 차별적 지점으로, 서사의 주요 축을 담당하는 구성적 면모를 지님을 알 수 있었다. 영화는 이러한 액자식 구성을 차용하 여, 모성의 세계와 부권의 세계로 서사적 배경을 구분 짓는다. 더불어, 매체 전환 과정에서 기존 콘텐츠 의 시대상이 반영된 지점이 과감하게 수정되기도 한다는 점을 알 수 있었다. 매체 전환은 매체 간의 상호교환이라는 기능도 가능하게 하여, 기존 발레 공연의 요소가 후에 창작된 영화에도 영향을 끼쳤음 을 알 수 있었다. 주류 문화가 그 문명 내부의 규범을 학습시키고 권력을 강화하는 수단으로 이용된다 는 비판적 시각도 존재한다. 하지만, 문화콘텐츠가 변모하는 지점을 포착하고 그 차별점을 언급하는 과정을 통해, 해당 콘텐츠를 기존과는 다른 시선으로 바라보고 분석할 수 있을 것이다. 이를 통해 다양한 담론을 구성해내는 것이 지금 연구자들의 공통의제가 되어야 할 것이다.
