This paper attempts to examine the representation in contemporary art of the recent refugee crisis, migration and radical diaspora across Europe and the Mediterranean. It examines the works of artists at international exhibitions and biennials, by observing the aesthetic ethics used to present current refugee issues, considering the different ways art can discuss human values and lives. The problem of migration and refugees stems from conflict and war arising under globalization due to the rapid re-organization of politics and economics. The European refugee crisis has encouraged nationalism within and between countries, defining borderlines and avoiding responsibility for the displaced refugees. This leads to a dislike and rejection of refugees, which naturally leads to infringement on human rights and the loss of the right to live. Increasing numbers of refugees and migrants are wandering around in search of a place to be accepted, and are alienated by political and economic power, and categorized as radical subjects. The reason for dealing with these issues in the recent international exhibition is not to find a political and diplomatic solution to the situation. However, it is intended to visualize these problems as art, to ask us what is the value of life, and to open up possibilities for various interpretations and discussions on the issues of refugees and migration.

본 논문은 최근 유럽과 지중해에서 붉어진 이주와 난민사태 그리고 급진적 디아스포라의 문제를 동시대 미술 속에서 살펴보고자 한 것으로, 국제 전시와 비엔날레에 등장한 예술가들의 작품 속에서 이러한 현상이 어떻게 표상되고, 논의될 수 있는지 다양한 시각에서 고찰하고자 한다. 또한, 난민 문제와 그 표상에 있어 어떠한 미학적 윤리의식이 발현될 수 있는지, 또 예술이 인류의 삶과 가치를 논할 수 있는지에 대해 다각도로 살펴보고자 한다. 이주와 난민의 문제는 전지구화 현상으로 인해 빠르게 재편되는 정치와 경제구도 속에서 발발한 분쟁과 갈등에서 비롯되었으며, 사회적, 정치적 요인이 복잡하게 결합되어 발생한 것이다, 따라서, 그 해결책과 방법을 찾는 것도 쉽지 않다. 유럽 국가들은 자국민 이기주의를 앞세우며 서로에게 난민 문제에 대한 책임을 전가하고 있으며, 국경의 경계를 강화하고 있다. 이러한 현상은 공동체 의식을 가졌던 유럽을 분열시키고, 국가 간 민족주의적 감정을 부추겼다고 오인되고 있으며, 이는 난민 혐오와 배척으로 연결되고 있다. 증가하는 난민과 이주민들은 받아 줄 곳을 찾아 정처 없이 유랑하며, 급진적 주체로서 타자화되어 주류 권력에서 더욱 소외되고 있다. 최근 열린 국제전시에서 이러한 문제를 다루고자 하는 이유는 현 사태에 대해 정치ㆍ외 교적인 해결점을 찾고자 하는 것은 아니다. 다만, 이러한 문제를 예술로서 가시화하며 우리에게 가치 있는 삶의 자세를 요구하고, 난민과 이주의 문제에 대해 다양한 해석과 논의를 펼칠 수 있는 가능성을 열고자 하는 것이다.
